It has been a long rebuild for the Baltimore Orioles, and this has been quite the story of the franchise over the years as they have now emerged as one of the elite contenders in the MLB, which says a lot about how the club’s expectations have taken it up a notch now more than ever. But with that said, can the Orioles actually deliver a promising finish and win the World Series this season?
Rewarding Aftermath of a Long Rebuild
After that regime change that saw GM Mike Elias as the new man at the front for the franchise, the Orioles have made sure that he would not miss the chance to overhaul the squad, from the scouting side all the way to player development, he has definitely delivered well with promising results that have led them to come up with winning campaigns and massive selections down the stretch.
Of course, the rebuild was tough with losses as the team went on to lose 108 and 110 games in two straight seasons, but those losing campaigns brought them the next generation of Orioles baseball as they were rewarded with cornerstone pieces such as Adley Rutschman and Gunnar Henderson – both of which have become phenomenal stars in the game who can make an immediate impact in the game.
From 115 losses in 2018 and 110 losses in 2021, the Orioles made a massive splash in 2023 after tallying 101 wins. That marked the first 100-win season that the Orioles had enjoyed since the 1980 MLB season, in which they finished with a 100-62 record. It has been a long time coming, and the club is now roaring loud with a lot of hopes to secure their first World Series title since 1983. The Birds are hovering over the World Series at this point, and it is definitely theirs to lose now more than ever. This is going to be a promising story that many fans will remember should the team come up with a victory in the World Series.
Can the Orioles Capitalize on their Chances this Season?
The Orioles have been banking a lot of wins this season and are on the pace for another 100-win season. As of the time of writing, the Birds sit second in the American League with a 57-34 record, just a win behind the Cleveland Guardians for the top spot. This also means that they are sitting atop the AL East with a three-game lead over the New York Yankees. So what are the big factors that will play a huge role in their chances of winning for the 2024 MLB season?
Corbin Burnes Emerging as a Star
In case you missed it, Baltimore ace Corbin Burnes suits up for the Midsummer Classic, bringing his name to the bigger spotlight that many fans have been hyping him up for. In his first season with the Birds, Burnes has been selected to his fourth All-Star Game in a row. At the age of 29, he continues to provide the promising spark that the Orioles need from him night in and night out. In his first 18 starts with the team, Burnes has contributed to a 9-3 record with an ERA of 2.32. This is second in the American League in terms of efficiency, which definitely says a lot about how he has become an efficient star for the Orioles at this point – the makings of a promising squad in the long run that can win a championship.
Gunnar Henderson’s Rise to Elite Status
From being selected at no. 42, winning the Rookie of the Year Award, and now an All-Star, it does seem that Gunnar Henderson himself is enjoying a promising campaign in the 2024 MLB season at this point, and it cannot be denied that he is enjoying a promising rise to elite status in the game. At the age of 23, Henderson is definitely showing that he can come up with a promising game with his athletic game that presents his large frame at 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds, but also fast and powerful. His explosive game is definitely showing that the Orioles are good at developing in their games, and one can even say that he is the future of the Birds at this point. If you want a promising comparison to his level of play right now, only Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani have hit more home runs this season.
Beginning of a Dynasty
It is easy to say that the Orioles have invested well with their young players, banking on a treasure trove of young and elite performers who have what it takes to play at a high level. This started out when they brought former No. 1 overall draft pick Adley Rutschman to the Majors. They worked out on Henderson after that, and then followed by Grayson Rodriguez. The youth movement in the team is a start of a promising dynasty in the MLB, and it cannot be denied that the Orioles are coming up with impressive results, which says a lot about how the team can come up with winning strides and a much more deliberate result at this point in time. Baltimore is now a winning team, and one can say that they are ready to roll in the playoffs once more.
