LA Galaxy? LAFC? Inter Miami? Columbus Crew? Last year’s contenders were nowhere to be found on the upper echelons of their respective conferences, and it has opened up the path for new contenders to step in and take over the spotlight at the top of the East and West. Now more than ever, the landscape of the MLS has changed well so far, and it cannot be denied that we are seeing the emergence of new power in the league.
Over the years, the MLS has often been regarded as a league that could not produce top-notch contenders – or at least have multiple of these elite teams in a single season. So far, this hasn’t been the case for the current MLS campaign, with Philadelphia and Vancouver rising as new contenders in the league and making a name for themselves now more than ever.
So how did these two teams came to be at the top of their respective conferences? Well, it wasn’t easy, but the power shift sure played a role as to how they have found open windows of opportunity to prove themselves as contenders to watch in the MLS. Neither of these teams were at the depths of the league last season, so it wasn’t as shocking as it should be that they eventually found their way to the top.
They were lingering around in the past few years, hanging around with some short playoff runs. They learned hard lessons, suffered tough losses, and eventually improved one season after another.
Until they were eventually ready to roll. Thus the 2025 season kicked off, and all of a sudden, it wasn’t the usual suspects sitting at the top. It was Philadelphia in the East, and Vancouver in the West – a huge difference and a change of scenery from what was originally expected to begin with.
Can Philadelphia Stay on the Chase?
Philadelphia is the league-leading club as of the time of writing with 37 points in an 11-3-4 record in the first 18 games. They have the most wins and have the third-most goals scored in the season so far, just behind Inter Miami (36 goals) and Chicago Fire (35 goals) at 34 goals. It has been a wonderful season for the team, but seeing as how the East is laid out to be one of the most competitive scenes in the league at this point, one can say that it has been their season to remember so far.

Still, a lot can happen in the next few months and the MLS is expected to get more intense. For starters, Union’s lead is just a meager four points ahead of Cincinnati FC. That isn’t a very comfortable cushion of a lead, to begin with, and it just means that there’s indeed more to look out for as the Eastern Conference landscape doesn’t seem to be that established yet. There are still at least a few shakeups expected to take place.
That being said, Philadelphia remains a menace wherever they play, boasting one of the best records both at home (6-1-3) and on the road (5-2-1). This should be a promising standard moving forward and what should the rest of the league expect from them as well.
Vancouver on the Rise
It is no secret that Vancouver is the second-best team in the league right now – whether its by wins, record, or points. They only lag behind the Union by a few notches. This just means that there’s still indeed more to expect as the Canadian club is making noise on the big stage, and it is expected that there will be more challenges for them as well.
Just like Philly, the Whitecaps don’t have that much of a cushion when it comes to holding the top spot in the West. They only lead San Diego by three points, and then Minnesota and Portland by five points. Ahead of the lead contenders from last year, however, it does seem that they’ve put some distance over LAFC, Seattle, and Galaxy. At this rate, it would be easier for the team to maintain the lead heading into the rest of the season.

Another team that boasts a strong performance on both sides of the pitch, Vancouver stands with a 6-1-2 record at home and a 4-1-3 record on the road – a pretty competitive record for a team that had zero expectations to begin with. A lot of work remains to be done, especially on their goalscoring side. However, what we can praise here is that Vancouver’s defense stands out, having conceded the fewest goals at 14 – and no other team has a better record, with the New England Revolution coming close at 15.
While both the Philadelphia Union and Vancouver Whitecaps have shocked the league with their commanding performances so far, the real test lies ahead. With only a slim lead in their respective conferences, consistency, squad depth, and tactical flexibility will be key in weathering the second half of the season. The Eastern and Western Conferences remain tightly contested, and any slip-up could change the entire playoff picture.
Philadelphia’s dynamic offense and well-rounded road performances give them a strong shot at staying ahead, while Vancouver’s resolute defense and newfound identity have made them a force to be reckoned with in the West. But as history shows, the MLS is unpredictable – and that’s what makes the race so compelling.
Will these underdog stories finish at the summit? Or will the usual heavyweights rise back into the spotlight? One thing is certain: both clubs have proven they’re no fluke, and the rest of the league has no choice but to take them seriously. The road to the playoffs is heating up – and Philadelphia and Vancouver are right in the thick of it.
