Patty Mills Set to Return to NBA After Signing with Utah

Patty Mills was a promising standout in the 2024 Paris Olympics, showing off his impressive talent at a high level when he delivered strings of fiery performances in the big stage for Australia. Now that it is all over, it seems that the blazing scorer from Down Under takes his talents back to the NBA possibly for the last time with the Utah Jazz in the 2024-25 season.

The Jazz have agreed to bring in a promising veteran in Mills, who enters his 16th year in the NBA after playing for the Atlanta Hawks and the Miami Heat in the 2023-24 season. The Jazz missed the playoffs in the same season, and adding the Australian guard could definitely see them some improvement in the coming campaign.

Selected 55th overall in the 2009 NBA Draft, Mills has been a promising player in the NBA as well, playing for a total of six teams before signing with the Jazz. Utah gets a reliable veteran and a reliable scorer in Mills, adding him to their array of guards in the roster heading into the 2024-25 season.

An Elite Performer in the International Stage

Mills has been praised for his ability to play at a high level for Australia when it matters most. Playing in all five Olympic Games for Australia, Mills led them to win their first medal back in 2020 in Tokyo, where they finished with a bronze award. On top of that, Mills led Australia to a gold medal finish five times in the FIBA Oceania Championship going for the winning campaigns in 2007, 2011, 2013, and 2015.

At the end of his national team run, Mills would finish as the fifth all-time scorer in the Olympics with 550 points, passing Wlamir Marques in the recent campaign. Mills has been revered as one of the best scorers for Australia, and it cannot be denied that he is definitely still at his high level of play despite being at the age of 36.

Mills iconically drilled a fadeaway jumper to force overtime against Serbia in the quarterfinal over NBA MVP Nikola Jokic. Serbia would go on to win the game, 95-90 in overtime, but it was one of the most iconic games for Mills, who finished the game with 26 points on 11-of-21 shooting.

What Does Mills Bring to the Table for Utah

Now slated to play under head coach Will Hardy, there are a lot of expectations for Mills to play at a high level for the team. With Collin Sexton and Keyonte George locking up the starting roles in the backcourt for the team, it is easy to say that Mills will come off as a reserve in the squad and will even be providing the needed veteran leadership in the team in the season.

At his peak, Mills won the 2014 NBA Finals with the San Antonio Spurs when they defeated the Miami Heat – led by LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh. Mills was praised at the time for his fiery shooting from three and even scored a combined 31 points in the final two games of the series.

For the 2023-24 season, he averaged 5.8 points, 1.5 assists, and 1.2 rebounds in 13 games with the Miami Heat. He did not play a lot of games ever since he moved from the Spurs, but Mills sure can offer an impressive push in his game if given the chance in Utah.

Patriots Send Matt Judon Amidst Contract Stalemate

Patriots Send Matt Judon Amidst Contract Stalemate

It has been quite some time since Matt Judon has seen some action in the training camp for the New England Patriots this offseason so far. With the dispute prolonged up to the early games of the preseason, the Pats have opted to pull off a trade card instead, sending the linebacker to the Atlanta Falcons heading into the 2024 season.

At the age of 32, Judon definitely deserves some kind of appraisal from the Patriots after a good season in the 20233 campaign. He was set to make $6.5 million in his final year with the Pats before he reached out to come up with contract talks throughout the course of the offseason. However, no progress was reported over the past few months and thus led to the stalemate.

Instead, Judon is now heading south to play for the Falcons. There are many critics who said that the Pats did not handle this situation well, and it cannot be denied that Judon could have been an impressive linebacker for New England if he was utilized well in the lineup. Now he is bringing his talents to another rival contender where he can come up with a closing run in his career.

A Stalemate Led to Nothing

Judon protested and did not show up for the Patriots’ training camp after he continued to protest his desire to remain with the team but get at least a new extension heading into the 2024 season. The linebacker played just four games in the 2023 season after suffering a bicep tear. That was one of the major reasons why the Patriots considered not to extend his contract back then.

Still, Judon had four sacks, posting 66.5 sacks in his eight-season run with the Baltimore Ravens and Patriots. He even posted 14 sacks per season in 2021 and 2022, but his protest and refusal to play in the training camp began when the Patriots handed out a lot of hefty extensions, but not to him.

Not signing Judon, however, leaves New England with at least $45 million in salary cap space, meaning that they can still make moves if needed. The Pats have signed the likes of safety Kyle Dugger, safety Jabrill Peppers, running back Rhamondre Stevenson, defensive lineman Christian Barmore, and offensive tackle Mike Onwenu, among others, to extensions this offseason.

What’s Next for the Patriots and Judon?

Without Judon, the Patriots are clearly on the fence about contending so far. They will still have to figure out which players they can count on at this point, with the likes of Anfernee Jennings, Josh Uche, Raekwon McMillan, and others set to step up in the coming season.

Judon, on the other hand, takes his talents to a team that is already in win-now mode. This certainly comes as a massive shift to the team’s chances considering that they have already shelved rookie edge Bralen Trice on injury reserve heading into the season. The Falcons have already made some big strides in the previous season, and now key additions have further strengthened their chances at this point.

The Falcons have signed quarterback Kirk Cousins to lead the offensive unit to begin the offseason. The additions of defensive tackle Grady Jarrett, safety Jessie Bates, and cornerback AJ Terrell have all been quite a massive move, and capping it off with Judon seems to lock up Atlanta’s defensive pillar now more than ever.

Bad Markers: Mohegan Sun in Connecticut Sues Former Universal Studios Exec for Owing $2.7 Million

Bad Markers: Mohegan Sun in Connecticut Sues Former Universal Studios Exec for Owing $2.7 Million

A former Universal Studios executive is facing legal charges from Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut for allegedly passing fraudulent markers worth $2.7 million. He is a prolific gambler, states the lawsuit, and reportedly lost over $5 million in just one day.

Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut has filed a lawsuit against former Universal Studios executive Ron Meyer, seeking to recover over $2.7 million in gambling markers. The lawsuit, which was submitted to the Superior Court, shines a spotlight on a high-stakes dispute involving one of the entertainment industry's most prominent figures.

Meyer, who served as president and chief operating officer of Universal Studios from 1995 all the way to 2013, is well-known in both Hollywood and the gaming world. His reputation as a prolific gambler in craps has drawn attention for years. However, this lawsuit reveals a less glamorous side of his gambling endeavors.

The $6 million line of credit

According to the lawsuit, Meyer, now 79, signed a credit line for $6 million at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Montville, Connecticut, on or around the 14th of August, 2015. The casino alleges that in October of 2017, Meyer utilized this line of credit to gamble and lost a staggering $5 million in one day. To cover this loss, Meyer signed approximately five markers, but those checks ultimately bounced, leaving him with a significant debt to the casino.

In April of 2018, Meyer reportedly agreed to a repayment plan. However, according to the filed complaint, he defaulted on his payments by September of 2018, leaving an outstanding balance of $2,782,500.

Legal dispute over credit extension

Meyer's legal team is fighting the casino's claims by arguing that extending gambling credit is illegal as per the law in Connecticut. Brian E. Spears, Meyer's attorney, filed a motion to strike the case, citing the state's long-standing prohibition on lending money to gamblers. Spears emphasized that this "ancient and deep-rooted ban" is at odds with the casino's actions.

The Mohegan Sun Casino operates under the auspices of the Mohegan Tribe, a sovereign nation permitted to provide casino gaming within the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. However, Spears argues that the tribe's gaming compact with the state of Connecticut does not explicitly authorize the extension of credit for gambling.

"The Mohegan compact contains no such allowance for the extension of credit," said Spears. He added that on the contrary, it specifies that all payments for class III wagers should be 'made by cash, cash equivalent, check, or credit card.'

This distinction is crucial, as Connecticut's other casino operator, the Mashantucket Pequots, secured an exception in their compact, allowing credit to be extended for gambling at the Foxwoods Resort Casino, which they own. Spears contends that the absence of a similar provision in the Mohegan compact means that Connecticut's prohibition on lending money to gamblers should apply to the Mohegan Sun.

A high-roller in the spotlight

Meyer's gambling habits have long been a topic of interest. In 2020, The Daily Mail reported that Meyer had allegedly lost over $100 million on dice games through the years. The report described him as one of the "top three most sought-after whales in the gaming industry," a term used to describe high-rolling gamblers who are courted by casinos due to their large wagers.

While the $100 million figure has not been independently verified, Meyer's penchant for high-stakes gambling is well-documented. His association with the world of high rollers has added a layer of intrigue to the legal battle with Mohegan Sun.

A career marked by success and controversy

Ron Meyer is a well-known figure in Hollywood, having co-founded the influential talent agency Creative Artists before transitioning to Universal Studios, where he became the longest-serving executive of a major film company. However, his career has not been without controversy. In 2020, Meyer resigned as chairman of Universal amid claims that he was being extorted over an alleged affair with Charlotte Kirk, a British actress.

As the legal battle between Meyer and Mohegan Sun continues, it remains to be seen whether the casino will be able to recover the millions it claims it is owed. At the heart of the case lies the question of whether Connecticut's prohibition on lending money to gamblers will override the casino's efforts to collect on the unpaid markers. For now, the lawsuit serves as a reminder of the risks that come with high-stakes gambling, even for those at the top of their game.

All Eyes are on the New Caesars Casino in Virginia; On Track to Open in the Last Quarter of 2024

All Eyes are on the New Caesars Casino in Virginia; On Track to Open in the Last Quarter of 2024

All eyes are on the much-anticipated and much-talked about Caesars casino in Virginia, which is finally slated to open in the last quarter of 2024. The casino is slowly taking shape and is expected to add a broader impact to Virginia's casino sector, which already has 3 casinos at the moment, but none are as big or grand as this.

The much-anticipated casino from Caesars Virginia is on track to make a grand entrance into the state's entertainment landscape later this year. The project is set to open in the fourth quarter, as stated by Ray Dunkle, the director of gaming operations for the Virginia Lottery. During a recently-concluded meeting of the Virginia Lottery Board in Richmond, he voiced his excitement about the ongoing progress, stating, "The permanent casino, the construction there is moving great."

A witness to significant changes

The casino, located on the historic Schoolfield Mill site in Danville, is undergoing rapid transformation. Dunkle noted a substantial change in the appearance of the site which highlights the project's advancement. He stated that it looks a lot different, and "if we would go and stand in that same place right now, it would be a different look for sure." He further emphasized their commitment to meeting the targeted opening timeline.

In addition to the main construction, the temporary gaming facility, located in Danville, is also witnessing significant enhancements. Dunkle gave details about the new games and planned expansions, emphasizing the growth in gaming options at the interim setup. He said that they had approved 50 new games and 16 projects involving eight tables and 224 games. Currently, the tent-like temporary setting offers more than 30 table games and a total of 826 slot machines, providing a robust gaming experience while the full-scale casino is being completed.

An impressive growth trajectory in Virginia

The casino industry in Virginia has been experiencing impressive financial growth. The three casinos in the state, namely HR Bristol, Danville Casino, and Rivers Casino in Portsmouth, have collectively generated significant revenues, with the Danville facility playing a key role. According to the Virginia Lottery's director of finance, Deborah Courtney, these casinos made approximately $673.9 million in revenue for 2024. This marks a substantial increase from the $255.5 million in the previous fiscal year.

As is expected, the rise in revenue has also led to a sharp increase in tax contributions from the casino industry. Total tax revenue generated by the casinos reached $123.76 million this year, a significant jump from the almost $46 million recorded in 2023. The expanding financial footprint of the industry clearly shows the positive economic impact that these establishments are having across the state, with Danville's casino playing a vital role in this growth.

The profound role of Caesars Virginia

The Caesars Virginia project represents a key investment in the entertainment and economic landscape in Virginia. Initially estimated at $400 million, the total investment in the casino and hotel resort has now almost doubled to about $750 million. This substantial financial commitment shows the importance of the project to both Caesars Entertainment and the local community.

Also, while the projected number of jobs has been slightly adjusted, with estimates now ranging from 900 to 1,300 positions (as approved by the City Council), the project still promises vast economic benefits and employment opportunities for the area. The casino is well expected to become a cornerstone of the local economy, providing both direct employment and indirect benefits to surrounding businesses.

The Virginia Lottery, as the overall overseer, continues to monitor both the compliance and progress of the existing and new casinos under its care. Although representatives from Caesars Virginia have been somewhat reluctant to comment on the current developments in the sector, the momentum of construction and positive forecasts, especially financially, suggest that the casino will make a strong debut.

Mirage Relics, Including Famous Arch and Siegfried & Roy Sculpture, Make Their Final Exit

Mirage Relics, Including Famous Arch and Siegfried & Roy Sculpture, Make Their Final Exit

Thank you for the memories! The relics from The Mirage make their final exit, temporarily blocking traffic on Las Vegas Boulevard last Wednesday. The Mirage memorabilia - including the famous Mirage arch and the sculpture of Siegfried & Roy and one of their much-loved tigers - will make the Neon Museum their new home.

On Wednesday, Las Vegas Boulevard witnessed a brief but significant (and nostalgic) event as the iconic Mirage arch, a fixture for 34 years on the Strip, was transported to its new home at the Neon Museum. The 30-foot arch, once a symbol of the Mirage hotel, made its way down the street it had faced for decades, capturing the attention of onlookers and symbolizing a chapter closing in the ever-evolving history of Las Vegas. Its final destination, the Neon Museum, lies five miles north of its original location.

Preserving history: The Mirage arch's journey

The transfer of the Mirage arch was not just a logistical challenge but also a meaningful gesture in preserving Las Vegas' rich cultural history. The Seminole Tribe of Florida, who own the Hard Rock brand and made a recent purchase of the operating rights to the Mirage, donated the arch to the Neon Museum. The tribe acquired the Mirage from MGM Resorts in 2021 for $1.075 billion as part of their broader strategy to expand the Hard Rock brand.

In addition to the Mirage arch, other notable relics from the iconic hotel are also en route to the museum. These include the sculpture of the famous magician duo Siegfried & Roy, accompanied by one of their beloved tigers, measuring 17 feet, and the Mirage sign measuring 27 feet that once adorned the hotel's legendary volcano lagoon. These artifacts will soon find a new home in the Neon Museum's esteemed Neon Boneyard, a space dedicated to preserving the city's historic signage.

A changing skyline and the transformation of The Mirage

The Seminole Tribe's acquisition of the Mirage marks a significant shift in the Las Vegas Strip. The Mirage, originally developed by visionary Steve Wynn, was a game-changer in the city's history, setting new standards for luxury and entertainment when it opened in 1989. However, as the city continues to evolve, so too does its skyline.

The Seminole Tribe is in the process of transforming the Mirage into a Hard Rock resort and casino hotel, the second in Vegas, with a grand reopening planned for 2027. The highlight of this transformation will be a guitar-shaped hotel set to replace the iconic volcano show, a staple of the Mirage for decades. Interestingly, the site where the 660-feet hotel will rise is also the location of the first-ever casino licensed on the Strip, adding another layer of historical significance to the project.

The Mirage arch's future at the Neon Museum

While the Mirage arch has found a temporary resting place at the Neon Museum, its journey is far from over. The museum has plans to relocate from its current site to the Arts District by 2027, where it will further expand its display space. When the move is complete, the Mirage arch, along with other historic signs, will be displayed in a much larger and more prominent setting.

At the Neon Museum, the Mirage arch will join a collection of other iconic signs from Las Vegas' past. Among them are signs from Moulin Rouge, Stardust, and Riviera - remnants of a bygone era, now preserved for future generations.

The Hard Rock transition

As the transformation of the Mirage into the Hard Rock Las Vegas continues, there are still a few legal and logistical hurdles to overcome. For instance, Hard Rock officials have asked that the gaming license of the property remain operational during the construction period. In July, they requested for a two-year waiver of the license with the Clark County Business License Department, just six days prior to the Mirage officially closing its doors. This waiver, if granted, would allow the license to remain active during the three-year transformation process, with the possibility of two more extensions for six months each.

Under Clark County regulations, gambling licenses must be suspended if the licensee does not meet specific requirements for over 30 consecutive days. However, exceptions can be made if there is a valid reason for the delay. The Clark County Liquor and Gaming Licensing Board is scheduled to review Hard Rock's application at its meeting on August 20, potentially paving the way for a smoother transition.

Esports Takes Different Direction with Olympic Esports Games

Esports Takes Different Direction with Olympic Esports Games

In the aftermath of the decision in the 142nd IOC Session at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee has announced the creation of the Olympic Esports Games. This changes the dynamic of the games as it takes another level of growth and development – bringing esports to a whole new direction.

This has gained a lot of varied reactions from the esports community so far. But according to former Riot Games executive and COO of Loaded Chris Hopper, it does seem that this is a bold move that will help esports ascend to a bigger audience at hand while also sending the esports world to an expanded scene now more than ever.

For many, this change of direction for the esports world means further recognition in the game, and a promising sight for players who have built a reputation in various games. It cannot be denied that being able to call these players as Olympians sounds more appealing than just esports players to begin with, which says a lot about how it is expected to change the perception of esports and its prominence as well.

A Big Opportunity for Esports

Hopper, who has a lot of experience in league operations, claimed that this will be a promising opportunity for esports to have a bigger and wider audience, as well as ensuring the increase of players who will contend for the various games in the esports. According to Hopper, being able to place esports players in the same category as Olympians does have a nice ring to it.

"I think anytime there's a chance to put esports and, more broadly, video gaming in the right kind of light in an authentic and organic way, and showcase players of the caliber of Olympians — that's an awesome thing," said Hopper. "I view this as being very much in the ethos of the Olympics—trying to provide an opportunity for the greatest competitors to play together on the same stage and provide visibility for that.”

The Olympics will better highlight the skill and mastery of players who do not have a lot of opportunities in their respective countries. Not all countries have all the popular esports, and there are certain countries where a specific esports title may not be popular at all. Furthermore, the Olympic Esports Games could definitely boost the industry as a whole, possibly bringing sponsors, more media exposure, and different benefits that would extend the esports industry’s promising potential.

Addressing Challenges

Of course, esports can benefit from a massive exposure on the big stage, but Hopper also believes that it needs to be managed and handled perfectly if it is going to deliver the desired impact on the industry. However, there are plenty of hurdles that the Olympic Committee will have to address if esports events will be held well in 2028.

"You're going to run into challenges in everything from scheduling to location to qualifier circuits to which games are chosen to be included," said Hopper. "My hope is that with a new focus on long-term competition, some of these national Olympic organizing committees will start to help develop the infrastructure that hasn't natively grown in most major esports."

So far, the IOC has four years to prepare for the inclusion of esports in the Olympic Games. This just means that the whole world could be preparing for a more professional and sustainable esports ecosystem in the long run, with the games definitely taking a bigger spotlight soon.

Junior Caminero Happy in Return to Big Leagues with Rays
August 15th, 20244 mins

Junior Caminero Happy in Return to Big Leagues with Rays

A lot of fans have clamored for Caminero to be already promoted to the Majors. That intensified and took another level as the Tampa Bay Rays would go on to deal a couple of key hitters at the trade deadline, which meant that there was going to be an open roster spot. Well, fans got what they wanted – and Junior Caminero is definitely happier to see himself back on the big stage.

Caminero didn’t really believe that he would get a chance to return to the majors. But after 11 months, he was finally getting back to the big stage, and boy he did not miss the chance to make an impression for the Rays and all the fans who rooted for him at this point.

Caminero would go on to start at the third base and continued to bat fifth against the Houston Astros yesterday at Tropicana Field. There are high expectations for his game, but so far, he has managed to impress well with a blazing performance in his 2024 debut for the Rays, which says a lot about how he has played with a stronger pace in the game so far.

A Strong Potential in the Game

The no. 2 prospect for the Rays has been quite the impressive player that he was expected to be. Caminero just finished his season with the Double-A Montgomery last September when he was first called up to Tropicana Field to play for the Rays. He did not expect it back then, and certainly did not expect it now. Still, it was a great way for him to find his way back into the majors, and hopefully stay there for good.

“At that point, I was in Triple-A, and that was my big leagues. That was my team. I was there to be focused on that team,” Caminero said through interpreter Manny Navarro. “But now that I'm up here, now I'm focusing on here. … I'm going to do everything I can to help this team out and just do my part.”

At the age of 21, there are a lot of expectations for Caminero. But it does seem that the Rays are just keen to let him get comfortable at the highest level. He was called up without much of a designated role last time, but now he is slated to play as the team’s third baseman for the rest of the season.

“He's going to play a lot, and certainly, if he wants to provide a spark for our offense, we'll take it,” manager Kevin Cash said. “Last year was a pretty unique situation. … Like to think that he's a little bit better seasoned for it this year. And just to have a lane -- I don't think there was a clear lane for him last year to come in and play every day. He's going to have that now.”

A Return to Remember

Of course, Caminero did not manage to return right away and was hampered by a string of left quad strains. That injury held him to just 53 games in the Triple-A this season, even missing two weeks in April. His second injury led him to miss two months of action for Durham, and he was later reinstated from the injury list on July 19th.

In just nine games this month alone, Caminero went 14-40 with three homers. That just showed his impressive prowess in batting and the elite offense that he can offer for the Rays. For now, fans can hope to see him play a huge role in lifting the team’s hopes of a playoff chase with months left to play in the season.

Alcaraz Discusses Experience in Playing Olympic Doubles with Nadal

Alcaraz Discusses Experience in Playing Olympic Doubles with Nadal

While Carlos Alcaraz is set to return in the Cincinnati Open, the Spanish tennis star claims that he now has more experience in his belt than most people think, considering the fact he has played two massive runs in the Olympics, both in singles and doubles. However, Alcaraz further states that he is pleased to have the opportunity to play with Nadal on the big stage.

The team-up for the duo was quite one of the most promising partnerships among various tennis players. It has been hyped long before the Olympics began its hype for this year’s edition. One can consider that this was indeed a promising learning experience for Alcaraz with the way he has absorbed veteran versatility and confidence on the court with Nadal.

While they lost in the early stages, it is still quite a run to remember with the way these two stars have graced the court with their impressive plays and undeniable chemistry in the game.

An Experience to Remember

Alcaraz said that playing with Nadal has introduced him to a higher and more competitive level of tennis. So far, this has led to a lot of promising plays from the duo, with Alcaraz learning more about his game and what he can do in his game moving forward.

“It was a great experience, talking with Rafa off the court, knowing each other much better off the court. It was a great experience, obviously, playing doubles together. It was great,” Alcaraz said. “It was something that I will never forget, for sure. I learned a lot talking to him on court, off the court as well. I think we played a great tennis in doubles, even if we are not used to playing doubles very often.”

Alcaraz would go on to claim the silver medal in the singles, losing to Novak Djokovic in the Final. Of course, Alcaraz has taken all of these losses to heart and has certainly focused to actually come up with better strides in the long run. After all, he is still young and has a lot to learn in the game as well.

“A little bit disappointing at the end, because we thought that we could do it better, but in general, we were happy,” Alcaraz said. “And obviously talking about myself, I reached my dream, my dream came true, playing doubles alongside Rafa.”

Bigger Growth in the Game

Alcaraz has played with Nadal, a player who has amassed a lot of accolades in his career. The Spanish Maestro has tallied 22 major titles and 36 Masters 1000 trophies, and it is worth noting that Nadal himself has spent a total of 209 weeks at no. 1 in the ATP Rankings. For Alcaraz, his experiences this year is definitely something to build on to establish a legacy like Nadal’s.

“I always want to be better. I always think that I could do it better. Obviously, I had a great summer: Roland Garros, Wimbledon, silver in the Olympics. Obviously, I wanted the gold medal,” Alcaraz said. “After the matches, if I win or I lose, I like to find the bad things that I did in the matches, try to be better, try to in the next match not make the same mistakes in the shots or dealing with some situations. And that's what happened.”

That says a lot about how Alcaraz is putting all of those crucial learnings to work, especially if it means that he gets to show what he can offer on the big stage.

Revenues for Online Gaming Exceed Expectations in West Virginia as It Increases to $19.1 Million in June
August 15th, 20245 mins

Revenues for Online Gaming Exceed Expectations in West Virginia as It Increases to $19.1 Million in June

West Virginia online gaming revenues reached a record high of $19.1 million, up $1 million from last May's figures. All in all, when the revenue is compared to July of last year, it displays a staggering 77% increase.

West Virginia's online casino industry continues to gain momentum, with July 2024 posting a significant increase in revenue, further solidifying the state's position in the ever-competitive iGaming market in the US. After generating $17.9 million in May of 2024 along with $18.5 million in June of 2024, the state saw its revenue rise to $19.1 million in July of 2024, marking a $1 million increase compared to the previous May. This growth represents a substantial 77% increase compared to July 2023, making it the highest year-on-year revenue growth the state has experienced in nearly two years.

The $19.1 million in July 2024 would have set an all-time high for West Virginia's online casino revenue, if not for the substantial $20.68 million reported in March of 2024. Nevertheless, this continued strong performance suggests that West Virginia's online casinos are in the midst of one of their most successful periods since they first started.

Market leaders and licenses

As the state's online casino market continues to grow, competition among operators has apparently intensified. Charles Town and Greenbrier, two of the leading licenses in the state, remain neck and neck, with just a 1% difference in their market shares. These two licenses continue to dominate the market.

Meanwhile, Mountaineer Casinos, which partners with BetRivers and Caesars, is also making significant strides. In July 2024, Mountaineer announced an impressive revenue of $3.9 million, marking an all-time high for the licensee. This achievement has helped Mountaineer close in on a 20% market share, currently sitting at 19.4%. The strong performance of Mountaineer Casinos stresses the growing diversity of operators in the state, providing more options for online casino enthusiasts.

Despite the impressive revenue figures, one challenge that remains in West Virginia is the lack of detailed reporting on particular online casino performance. Unlike states such as New Jersey, which provides granular data on how individual online casinos are performing, West Virginia's reporting does not offer this level of transparency. This lack of detailed insight makes it difficult to pinpoint which specific online casinos are driving the state's revenue growth. However, the overall upward trend in revenue suggests that multiple operators are benefiting from increased player activity.

A look back at recent revenue trends

West Virginia's online casino market has seen consistent growth in recent months, with July 2024 marking another strong performance. Here is a look back at the revenue figures from recent months:

In July of 2024, the sector generated $19.1 million in revenue, preceded by $18.5 million for June. In May, the online casino market had $17.9 million in revenue, and in April of 2024, it also earned a noteworthy revenue of $17.8 million. In March, it earned its highest revenue of $20.68 million.

These figures show the resilience and upward trajectory of the market, despite fluctuations in monthly revenue. It's obvious that the March 2024 revenue of $20.68 million remains the highest on record, but with the current trend, industry analysts are closely watching the August 2024 figures to see if the market can surpass this milestone.

The evolution of West Virginia’s online casino landscape

West Virginia's online casino market has come a long way since its inception, with several operators now offering a wide range of gaming options to residents. Here's a quick overview of when each online casino launched in the state:

BetMGM launched in August 2020 and is affiliated with Greenbrier, while DraftKings began in July 2020 in partnership with Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races. Meanwhile, BetRivers opened in April of 2021 and is linked with Mountaineer, while Caesars also launched at the same time and is also affiliated with Mountaineer. FanDuel was the next operator to launch in May of 2021, and its affiliate is Greenbrier, while Golden Nugget opened later in the year, in October 2021. The next to begin operations was Fanatics in November of 2023, which is also linked to the Hollywood Casino, and last on the list is Betly, which launched in June of 2023. It is connected to Mardi Gras.

This diverse range of operators has contributed to the state's strong revenue growth, with each licensee bringing unique offerings to the market. The introduction of new players, such as Fanatics and Betly, has further expanded the market and provided more options for players.

Sphere Cranks Up the Volume: Concert-Goers Benefit from Louder Audio

Sphere Cranks Up the Volume: Concert-Goers Benefit from Louder Audio

Let's make some noise! The Sphere, which previously had to adhere to Clark County regulations of 65 decibels, is now allowed by the Paradise Town Advisory Board to increase its audio volume to up to 87 decibels. But there are still limitations: it can only do this 18 times a year, and only until midnight.

In a significant development for Las Vegas entertainment, the Paradise Town Advisory Board granted a waiver allowing the Sphere at the Venetian to exceed Clark County's limitations on noise decibels. The decision, made on August 13, came after months of speculation about how the Sphere would integrate audio with its external projections without violating local noise ordinances.

Addressing the noise dilemma

The Sphere, owned by Sphere Entertainment and operated by Madison Square Entertainment Corp., has quickly become a defining feature of the skyline of Las Vegas. Its "Exosphere," the world's biggest digital display, has captivated tourists and locals alike with its stunning visuals. However, adding audio to these projections posed a serious challenge - one that CEO James Dolan hinted at during a quarterly earnings call on May 13. At that time, neither Dolan nor Sphere officials provided details on how they would balance sound levels with Clark County's strict noise regulations.

That question was answered during the August 13 meeting when the board voted 3 - 1 to release a waiver permitting noise levels of as much as 87 decibels - an increase of 22 decibels compared to the current county limit of 65. While this decision marks a significant victory for Sphere Entertainment, it came with conditions. For one, the venue will only be allowed to reach this noise level 18 times a year, and only until 12am. These limitations were introduced as a compromise following concerns from both board members and local residents.

Resident protests and board concessions

The decision to grant the waiver did not come without controversy. Park Towers residents voiced their frustrations at the meeting, and their grievances stemmed from the July 3 and 4 tests of the Sphere's audio system, which reportedly rattled windows and disturbed the peace. Sphere representatives actually acknowledged these tests as an error, attributing the disruption to higher-than-approved decibel levels.

Initially, the waiver by Madison Square Entertainment Corp. did not include any restrictions on noise levels or frequency. However, following objections from the board itself, concessions were made. Board member Katlyn Cunningham notably expressed her concerns, stating, "That means you could make a jet engine, and I'm not going to go for that." This sentiment reflected the need for balance between innovation and community well-being.

The Sphere's impact on the Las Vegas Strip

Since its debut, the Sphere has dramatically altered the visual landscape of the Las Vegas Strip. The Exosphere's dazzling light displays have even influenced air travel, with passengers opting for seats that provide the best view of the venue. Additionally, the Sphere's popularity has contributed to a new ordinance banning pedestrians from stopping on the bridges that cross the Strip. Tourists frequently gather there to capture the perfect selfie with the Sphere’s vibrant graphics, leading to congestion and safety concerns.

However, the integration of audio presents unique challenges. While the Exosphere's visuals are best appreciated from a distance of at least a quarter mile, hearing the Sphere's audio requires proximity that might detract from the overall experience. This balancing act between sight and sound will be closely monitored as the venue begins to implement its new audio features.

Despite the waiver from the Paradise Town Advisory Board, the Sphere is not yet cleared to crank up the volume. The Clark County Planning Commission must also approve the waiver at its upcoming meeting on September 4. Given the board's endorsement, it seems likely that the commission will follow suit, but the final decision remains pending.

New Research Shows Significant Impact on Tax Revenue from Legalizing iGaming

New Research Shows Significant Impact on Tax Revenue from Legalizing iGaming

A recently concluded study supports a long-time belief: that states can truly benefit from legalizing online gambling and potentially earn anywhere from $9 billion to up to $15 billion a year in tax revenues.

A new study conducted by the regulatory intelligence enterprise Vixio, based in London, indicates that US states could experience a significant financial boost by legalizing online slot machines and table games. Commissioned by Light & Wonder, a worldwide developer and manufacturer of gambling services and products, the study explores the potential tax revenue that could be generated if more states embrace iGaming.

At the moment, a total of only seven US states allow online casino gaming: New Jersey, Delaware, Connecticut, West Virginia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island. However, the study's findings suggest that if the 44 other states that currently permit mobile sports betting or land-based casino gambling were to legalize online gambling websites and apps, the national online casino market could surge to nearly $50 billion a year in gross gaming revenue. This expansion could result in a tax windfall of as much as $15 billion a year.

Substantial tax benefits

The Vixio report shows the substantial financial benefits that iGaming could bring to different states. "States and local governments could conservatively generate approximately $9 billion to $15 billion in annual tax revenue from legal internet gaming," the study summarizes. This potential revenue stream could be particularly appealing to states seeking new sources of funding for infrastructure and public services.

One of the key takeaways from the study is that iGaming has the potential to outperform other forms of gambling in terms of tax revenue generation. While sports betting has gained significant traction in recent years, it is still a small-margin industry compared to online casinos. The win rates for table games and interactive slots are extensively higher than those for sports betting, making iGaming a more lucrative option for states.

Online gaming outshines sports betting

In 2023, iGaming tax revenue from a mere six states amounted to $1.61 billion. In contrast, tax revenue from legal sports gambling reached $2.06 billion across 29 states with operational commercial sportsbooks. Despite the broader adoption of sports betting, iGaming delivered significantly higher revenue per capita in the states where it was legal, particularly in New Jersey, Michigan, and Pennsylvania.

The Vixio report also highlights the potential for even greater revenue generation in more populous and affluent states. Should states like Massachusetts, Maryland, California, and New York legalize iGaming, they are expected to outdo the per capita gross gaming revenue generated by current markets. "It is likely that larger, wealthier states that may authorize iGaming in the future would over-perform compared to the blended average revenue per adult figure used for the purposes of this report," noted the Vixio report.

Last year, combined iGaming GGR from the six states reached an astounding $6.17 billion, a nearly 23% increase year over year. Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Michigan alone accounted for over 90% of this revenue, with each state generating around $1.9 billion.

Potential big winners

The study also identifies several states that could be the biggest beneficiaries of iGaming legalization. For instance, Vixio projects that New York could generate approximately $1 billion per year just by legalizing online casinos, while Illinois could see nearly $700 million in annual tax revenue. These estimates highlight the significant financial potential for states that have yet to embrace online casino gambling.

Despite the promising financial outlook, however, iGaming faces opposition from various quarters. Critics often cite concerns within the society, including the risk of increased problem gambling as well as the prospect of underage individuals accessing online casino platforms. These concerns continue to be significant hurdles in the path toward broader iGaming legalization.

Nevertheless, the Vixio study presents a compelling case for the financial benefits of iGaming. As states across the US continue to grapple with budget shortfalls and try to seek new revenue sources, the potential tax windfall from legalizing online slot machines and table games could become increasingly difficult to ignore.

Alex Ovechkin Eyes Playing in the 2026 Winter Olympics

Alex Ovechkin Eyes Playing in the 2026 Winter Olympics

The Olympics has definitely hyped a lot of players who want to make a name on the big stage – let alone at the international level. For Alex Ovechkin, however, it does seem that this is a chance for him to prove that he can actually dominate on the big stage and show that he can still make history for his country as well.

The current captain of the Washington Capitals and a decorated hockey player, Ovechkin is clearly chasing history in the twilight of his career. It is clear that he is already chasing down Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record for NHL goals, but it seems that he is also interested in playing some hockey games in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy.

Of course, that is not up to him. Amidst the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it does seem that Ovechkin’s country will not be able to participate in the Winter Olympics due to the IIHF’s suspension of all Russian national teams across all competitions. This means that Ovechkin’s hopes of a promising finish on the international stage might just be out of the equation.

Hopes on the International Stage

Ovechkin has been one of the most decorated players in the NHL, not just in the league, but even on the international stage as well. Ovechkin has played on multiple fronts in the Olympics, going for big games in 2006 in Turin, 2010 in Vancouver, and 2014 in Sochi. His first taste of international action at the senior level was back in 2004 when he represented Russia in the IIHF World Championship at the time.

At the age of 38, it does seem that Ovechkin still has a lot to offer in his game. That explains the confidence that he has in aiming for a return to the Winter Olympics. After all, he does have what it takes to put up impressive games on the big stage, and that is one of the reasons why he is still even the captain for the Capitals – who are seen as one of the competitive teams in the Eastern Conference.

"I don't know what's even going to happen there," Ovechkin said. "Yes, we want to play in the Olympics, but if they won't let us, what do we do? We'll see. It's not like I'm in the leadership of the NHL. The NHL Players' Association and the NHL are different things.”

Planning His Career Finish

Aside from the Olympics, which is in two years’ time for the Winter edition, Ovechkin has also expressed his interest in getting back to the Russian version of the NHL, which is the Kontinental Hockey League. He did spend some time in the league before he went on to bring his talents overseas and join the NHL.

“I still have two years left on my NHL contract,” Ovechkin said of his post-NHL plans. “Of course, I want to play my last game for Dynamo, where I started my career. But there's no point in raising this topic right now.”

In those four seasons before he played in the NHL, Ovechkin tallied a total of 36 goals and 33 assists. He even returned for a short stint during the NHL’s partial lockout in 2012 where he notched 19 goals and 21 assists.

For now, the focus for Ovechkin is to cement his place in the NHL. The task at hand for him is to score 41 more goals to break Wayne Gretzky’s all-time scoring record, which sits at 894 goals. That’s just one of his few plans that can come to fruition before the end of his career.
