Ex-NBA Player Arrested Amid Illegal Poker Ring Allegations in California

Former National Basketball Association player Gilbert Arenas was arrested yesterday, along with five other suspects, including an alleged member of an Israeli crime syndicate. The group was arrested following allegations that they ran illicit gambling games, notably poker, in the California mansion of Arenas. Former NBA standout Gilbert Arenas was arrested Wednesday along with five others in connection with an illegal gambling operation allegedly run out of his luxury Encino mansion. The federal indictment unsealed today claims the group, which included a suspected Israeli crime figure, operated high-stakes poker games and profited from unlawful gambling activity. Arenas, 43, known as 'Agent Zero,' faces three federal charges: conspiracy to operate an illegal gambling enterprise, operating an illegal gambling enterprise, and making untrue statements to federal investigators. He is scheduled to appear in US District Court in Los Angeles for arraignment. Organized poker ring allegedly tied to Israeli crime network Authorities say Arenas collaborated with Yevgeni Gershman, 49, also known as 'Giora,' a suspected high-ranking member of a multinational Israeli crime syndicate. The indictment alleges that from September of 2021 to July of 2022, the group ran illicit poker games, primarily 'Pot Limit Omaha,' at an Encino property owned by Arenas. He allegedly rented out the mansion specifically to facilitate these operations. In addition to Arenas and Gershman, the indicted defendants include: 48-year old Evgenni Tourevski, a.k.a. 'Eugene,' from Tarzana 52-year old Allan Austria, a.k.a. 'Elica,' from West Hills 27-year old Yarin Cohen, a.k.a. 'YC,' from Tarzana 43-year old Ievgen Krachun, from Tarzana All are charged with conspiracy and operating an illegal gambling business and are expected to appear in federal court today. Lavish setup included staff, security, and entertainment According to the indictment, Arenas enlisted 51-year old Arthur Kats from West Hollywood to prepare the mansion for gambling events. Kats recruited co-conspirators, arranged logistics, and collected rent from game organizers on Arenas' behalf. Gershman and several co-defendants are accused of managing the poker sessions, collecting rakes from each hand, and inviting players to participate. The games reportedly included full-service operations with hired valets, chefs, and even armed security guards. Additionally, young women were brought in to serve drinks, give massages, and offer companionship to players, all in exchange for tips. These women, however, were forced to pay a percentage of their earnings - dubbed a 'tax' - back to the organizers. Krachun's role as a 'chip runner' involved distributing chips, tracking players' wins and losses, and ensuring staff were paid accordingly. In addition to the gambling charges, Gershman faces three more counts alongside 35-year-old Valentina Cojocari of Woodland Hills. The two are accused of entering into a sham marriage to fraudulently obtain permanent US residency for Gershman. Prosecutors say they provided false information on immigration forms, including denying prior detentions and intent to engage in illegal activities. Cojocari was also arrested today and is due in court this afternoon. Potential penalties and ongoing investigation If they are convicted, each defendant could face up to five years in federal prison per charge. The case is being investigated by Homeland Security Investigations (Northridge), IRS Criminal Investigation, and the Los Angeles Police Department's Major Crimes Division & Transnational Organized Crime Section. Prosecutors from the US Attorney's Office in the Central District of California are leading the case. Assistant US Attorney Samuel J. Diaz is prosecuting, with asset forfeiture proceedings handled by Assistant US Attorney Ryan J. Waters. As always, defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Michael Mizrachi Claims 2025 WSOP Main Event and Hall of Fame Spot

There's a new victor on the poker felt: Michael Mizrachi brings home the title for the 2025 World Series of Poker Main Event, but he has also won the Poker Players Championship - both in the same year. For his achievements, he is being inducted into the prestigious Poker Hall of Fame. In a career-defining performance that will be etched into the annals of poker history, Michael 'The Grinder' Mizrachi has captured the 2025 World Series of Poker Main Event title, earning $10 million and achieving the rare feat of winning both the Main Event as well as the Poker Players Championship in the same summer. The triumph not only adds another WSOP bracelet to his collection but also cements his legacy with induction into the prestigious Poker Hall of Fame. A commanding victory right from the start The final table showdown at the Horseshoe Las Vegas Event Center saw Mizrachi enter Day One with a commanding chip lead, having dominated the previous rounds. The tone for the evening was set early when Mizrachi landed an ace on the river to crack second-place finisher Robert Wasnock's pocket kings. The pivotal hand handed Mizrachi the momentum he would carry to the title. By the start of the final day, Mizrachi held over 75% of the chips in play and wasted no time dispatching his remaining opponents. In just the first two hands, he eliminated Kenny Hallaert and Braxton Dunaway, both in 4th and 3rd place, respectively. Hallaert moved all-in with ace-queen offsuit but fell behind when Mizrachi's king-jack suited paired on the turn. Dunaway's ten-six suited was no match for Mizrachi's ace-ten, which held to set up the final duel. Heads-up and Hall of Fame bound The heads-up battle with Robert Wasnock started cautiously, with both players trading small pots. However, the decisive hand unfolded when Wasnock flopped two pair with ace-nine, only to be undone by Mizrachi's turned flush with ten-three suited. All chips went in on the turn, and the river failed to rescue Wasnock. Mizrachi, with the winning hand, raised his arms in triumph, securing the coveted Main Event bracelet - valued at $500,000 - and his place among the game's greats. Moments after his victory, Mizrachi was surprised at the table by an entourage of poker legends. Hall of Fame inductees and members Phil Hellmuth, Phil Ivey, John Hennigan, and Brian Rast gathered to announce Mizrachi's unanimous induction as the 65th member of the Poker Hall of Fame. "Mizrachi has completed what might be the most impressive feat in poker history by winning the two most difficult tournaments to win in the same year," said Ty Stewart, Chief Executive Officer of the WSOP. "Welcome to the Gallery of Champions and welcome to the Poker Hall of Fame." A legacy of greatness With this Main Event win, Mizrachi now holds nine WSOP bracelets, including four Poker Players Championship titles - which is a prestigious record in itself. This summer's performance stands as one of the most dominant in WSOP lore, and his dual triumph in 2025 adds a new chapter to an already decorated career. The World Series of Poker is the most prestigious and longest-running poker tournament in the world. Since its founding in 1970, the WSOP has awarded over $4 billion in prize cash. The series attracts hundreds of thousands of participants across various formats and continues to expand globally through WSOP Circuit Events, WSOP Europe, and even the WSOP Online festival. In 2024, the WSOP in Las Vegas shattered records with 229,553 participants and over $438 million in payouts.

Leo Margets Makes WSOP History with Final Table Appearance

A woman has made it to the final event of the World Series of Poker, breaking the barrier since 1995. She is Leo Margets, a professional poker player from Spain, and she was the last woman standing at the WSOP Main Event in 2009 as well. Margets notably won a WSOP bracelet in 2021 and is a member of the Spanish Poker Player Hall of Fame. History was made at the 2025 World Series of Poker Main Event as Leo Margets became the first woman in three decades to reach the prestigious final table. The poker pro from Spain now sits among the final nine players vying for the $10 million top prize, with each guaranteed to take home at least $1 million. The milestone makes Margets the first female finalist since Barbara Enright placed fifth in 1995, marking a groundbreaking moment for women in poker. "It's so unreal," Margets said following her final table qualification. "Right now, it's like a dream. It means so much, like how lucky I am to live this." A career 18 years in the making Margets, 41, was born in Barcelona and began her poker journey in 2007 after being introduced to the game on a casual date. What started as a curiosity quickly evolved into a passion, then a profession. She soon left her corporate job after completing a master's in management and communications at Madrid's IE Business School to pursue poker full-time. Her breakout moment came during the 2009 WSOP Main Event when she finished 27th in a field of over 6,500 players, where she earned $352,832 and the "Last Woman Standing" title. That performance catapulted her into the poker spotlight and kickstarted a career that has since seen her amass over $2 million in live tournament winnings across 121 recorded cashes, according to The Hendon Mob Poker Database. A bracelet winner and Spanish Hall of Famer In 2021, Margets claimed her first WSOP bracelet by winning $1,500 The Closer. She bested a field of 1,903 players, defeating Alex Kulev heads-up to take home $376,850. That same year, she was inducted into the Spanish Poker Hall of Fame with fellow countryman Adrian Mateos, solidifying her status as one of Spain’s most prominent poker figures. Her consistent success and presence in the game have long positioned her as a role model, particularly for aspiring female players in a traditionally male-dominated sport. Now, with a shot at the WSOP Main Event title, she stands on the verge of making even greater history. More than a poker pro Margets' resume extends far beyond the poker table. A multifaceted personality, she is an accomplished author, having written or co-authored three books that apply poker thinking to life and business decisions. Her most recent work, released in 2017, delves into the game's strategic and psychological insights and how they relate to personal growth and resilience. She's also no stranger to the spotlight outside poker. In 2014, she competed on Spain's version of Survivor, known as Supervivientes, and in 2023, she co-won Traitors España, a reality competition show, alongside professional boxer Joana Pastrana. Her public speaking engagements on risk management, mental toughness, and decision-making continue to draw attention across both business and gaming circles. Final table dreams and poker history in the making Heading into Tuesday's final table, Margets sits fifth in chips out of the nine remaining players from a colossal 9,735-entry field. While the pressure is immense, Margets has long proven she thrives under it. Should she go all the way, she would not only become the first woman to win the WSOP Main Event but also etch her name into the annals of poker history with one of the most iconic victories ever seen in the game.

WSOP 2025 Results Spark Backlash Amid Fairness Concerns

The WSOP is undoubtedly one of the biggest - if not the biggest - events in the world of poker each summer. But the recent WSOP event has come into question because the players reportedly colluded for a bonus prize being offered by ClubWPT Gold. ClubWPT Gold allegedly promised bonuses to some WSOP winners, specifically James Carroll and Jesse Yaginuma, and WSOP is investigating the final results. The World Series of Poker, known for being the most prestigious event on the poker calendar, is now involved in controversy following allegations of collusion at the final table of its 2025 Millionaire Maker tournament. At the heart of the uproar is a $1 million bonus promotion offered by ClubWPT Gold, a sweepstakes poker platform operated by the World Poker Tour, which is now drawing scrutiny from players, fans, and regulators. During the final moments of the Millionaire Maker event, professional player Jesse Yaginuma was able to defeat James Carroll in heads-up play, not only earning the $1.2 million WSOP prize but also triggering a ClubWPT Gold bonus tied to their 'Gold Rush' sweepstakes promotion. However, the way in which the match unfolded raised eyebrows across the poker community and led the WSOP to announce a formal investigation into the legitimacy of the play. ClubWPT Gold's sweepstakes bonus at the center ClubWPT Gold launched its 'Gold Rush' sweepstakes earlier this year, offering freeroll poker tournaments on its platform where players could win Gold Rush tickets. These tickets made them eligible for a $1 million bonus if they went on to win any of nearly a dozen select WSOP bracelet events. The promotion, though not officially sanctioned by the WSOP, created a lucrative incentive for participants - especially if they were already accomplished players. Earlier this summer, New Jersey's Michael Lavin became the first to claim the bonus after winning a WSOP shootout bracelet event. The controversy intensified on Wednesday when Yaginuma, who held one of these Gold Rush tickets, won the highly competitive Millionaire Maker. Viewers watching the final table on livestream quickly took to social media, questioning Carroll’s play and suggesting possible 'chip dumping' to help Yaginuma win and secure the million-dollar ClubWPT bonus. Suspicious hands fuel collusion allegations Many poker fans and analysts noted peculiar plays during the heads-up battle, particularly Carroll's pattern of raising marginal hands only to fold to reraises from Yaginuma. In one widely discussed hand, Carroll lost a substantial portion of his chip stack on what appeared to be a weak bluff. These moments fueled speculation that the players may have reached a side agreement to share in the ClubWPT prize or that Carroll may have intentionally lost. Despite a significant chip disadvantage, Yaginuma mounted a comeback and ultimately won the event. Carroll walked away with over $1 million for his second-place finish. The WSOP announced Thursday on X that it is investigating the match and neither player has received their prize money pending the results of the inquiry. The WSOP strictly prohibits collusion, and while private deal-making at final tables is rumored to happen on occasion, it has never been permitted or recognized by the tournament itself. Legal and regulatory clouds over sweepstakes poker The timing of the controversy is especially notable as sweepstakes poker sites, including ClubWPT Gold, are already facing increased legal scrutiny. Earlier this year, Nevada lawmakers passed a bill aimed at banning unregulated gambling platforms, including sweepstakes-style gaming. Although Governor Joe Lombardo has not yet signed the bill into law, the largest sweeps poker operator, Global Poker, voluntarily exited the Nevada market in April. ClubWPT Gold, which only launched in early 2025, is already unavailable in several states such as Delaware, Connecticut, and New York - all of which have either passed anti-sweepstakes legislation or are in the process of doing so. A new law in Connecticut, for instance, is set to take effect on October 1. Despite this, ClubWPT Gold has not made public announcements regarding its exit from these states. As of now, the platform continues to operate in most states except for Michigan, Idaho, Washington, and Montana - the latter of which officially outlawed sweepstakes-style games earlier this year. As of Friday, ClubWPT Gold has not issued any statement regarding whether it intends to honor Yaginuma's bonus or if it plans to revise the promotion in light of the controversy. The outcome of the WSOP investigation could significantly influence how sweepstakes-based poker promotions are handled, particularly when real-money bonuses intersect with major tournament events.

Rush Street Interactive Launches BetRivers Poker across Pennsylvania and Three Other States

Rush Street Interactive is a world-renowned sports betting and online casino provider in the US - and it has just announced the launch of BetRivers Poker, which was previously only available in Pennsylvania, into three more US states: Delaware, West Virginia, and Michigan. WSOP Main Event Begins in Vegas with Big Expectations

WSOP Main Event Begins in Vegas with Big Expectations

The World Series of Poker Main Event has already begun, and this year's event will be held once again in Las Vegas, where it all started. This year undoubtedly comes with heavy expectations, as it is the 56th annual series and there will be a total of 100 tournaments before the World Series of Poker wraps up on the 16th of July. A record-breaking summer, star players, fresh tech, and plenty of drama set the stage for poker's biggest annual event. The World Series of Poker is back in Las Vegas, marking its 56th edition with 100 bracelet events - the most in its storied history. With familiar faces, fresh controversies, and a potential new record in sight, the 2025 WSOP promises seven weeks of high-stakes action and compelling narratives. Moneymaker's legacy meets Gen Z There will be players in this year's WSOP Main Event who weren't even born when Chris Moneymaker won in 2003, launching the poker boom that changed the game forever. Sure, the same was true in 2024. But it remains a reminder of how far the WSOP has come since its cash-game beginnings in 1970. Fast forward to today: there are a new generation of players who will battle for poker's most coveted title, across two venues - Paris Las Vegas and Horseshoe Las Vegas - through July 16. GGPoker's new era and the WSOP+ app This is the first WSOP since GGPoker's parent company, NSUS Group Inc., acquired the brand from Caesars. While the tournament's bare bones remain the same, one major shift has already emerged: the introduction of the WSOP+ app. With the app, players can now register for events via mobile, monitor chip counts, and check blinds in real-time - streamlining what used to be a chaotic in-person process. However, smartphones are banned at the final three tables of any event, a rule change intended to preserve the integrity of late-stage play. After years of chasing Jamie Gold's 2006 record of 8,773 entrants, the Main Event finally shattered it in 2023 with 10,043 players - only to break it again in 2024 with 10,112. Can 2025 make it three in a row? This is unlikely, say insiders. Economic concerns persist, and US tourism has taken a hit - travel to Las Vegas dropped 8% in March year-over-year. These factors could nudge entry numbers just low enough to settle for the third-biggest Main Event ever. Beyond the Main Event While the Main Event gets the spotlight, the WSOP schedule is packed with variety: The Series opened with the popular 'Mystery Millions' The cheapest buy-in is the 'Gladiators of Poker' for $300, starting June 25 The highest stakes belong to the 'Super High Roller' which costs $250,000, and it is beginning on June 15 Prestige is on the line in the 'Poker Players Championship' for $50,000 a mixed-game tournament starting June 24 And innovation takes center stage with the June 22 'Battle of the Ages,' that have separate flights for players above and below age 50. Hellmuth vs. the clock, and Kristen Foxen chases history Phil Hellmuth, the all-time leader in WSOP bracelets with 17, has once again sparked controversy. Citing the grueling Main Event schedule, the 60-year-old initially announced he would skip this year's tournament - a move many believed was strategic pressure on organizers to add a rest day. Then came the backpedal: Hellmuth put the decision in the hands of a Twitter poll, promising to boycott in 2026 if the format remains unchanged. As usual, poker's ultimate showman has everyone watching. Kristen Foxen nearly broke through in 2024, finishing 13th in the Main Event and earning $600,000. But her quest for history this year goes beyond the headline event. With bracelet wins in 2023 and 2024 (albeit online), she aims to become the first woman ever to win bracelets in three consecutive years. Even with the asterisk some attach to online victories, Foxen is undoubtedly among the best tournament players in the world - and her performance this summer will be closely watched. Hall of Fame race heats up The WSOP also means another round of fierce debate: Who will join poker's Hall of Fame? Last year's inductee, Patrik Antonius, edged out a crowded field that included Josh Arieh, Kathy Liebert, Mike Matusow, and others. Newly eligible this year are Scott Seiver (seven-time bracelet winner) and Nick Schulman (six bracelets and a respected poker broadcaster). With only one spot open, we can all expect passionate debate, cries of snobbery, and no shortage of drama.

WSOP Circuit Back in Atlantic City After Five Years

WSOP Circuit Back in Atlantic City After Five Years

The World Series of Poker Circuit is once again returning to Atlantic City after five years, and this is only fitting because Atlantic City is where the tour began over 15 years ago. The WSOP Circuit is taking place in Harrah's Atlantic City, and it will be from August 14 until August 25. The World Series of Poker Circuit (WSOP-C) is making a long-anticipated return to Atlantic City this summer, marking a triumphant homecoming for one of poker's most prestigious tournament tours. Caesars Entertainment announced Monday that the iconic event will once again take place at Harrah's Resort Atlantic City - the site of the very first WSOP Circuit stop nearly two decades ago. Back to its roots Harrah's Atlantic City, a staple of the city's Marina District, will welcome players from around the globe for the WSOP-C event running from Thursday, the 14th of August, through Monday, the 25th of August, 2025. This marks the Circuit's first appearance in Atlantic City since 2020, when it was abruptly halted due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. "We are thrilled to welcome back the prestigious World Series of Poker Circuit to Harrah's Resort and the unmatched energy, excitement, and talent it brings," stated Senior Vice President and General Manager at Harrah's Atlantic City, Gregg Klein. "Hosting this iconic event reinforces our commitment to delivering premier gaming experiences and positions us as a top destination for esteemed players and poker fans alike." A historic legacy The WSOP Circuit was launched in January 2005 as a way to extend the excitement of the annual Las Vegas WSOP tournament throughout the year and across the country. Its inaugural stop was at Harrah's Atlantic City, making the resort a historic landmark in poker lore. At that first event, Canadian player Nghi Tran claimed victory in the $9,500 + $500 No-Limit Hold'em Championship, walking away with a prize amounting to $780,615 after outlasting a field of 249 total entries. From 2005 to 2020, Atlantic City was a regular destination on the WSOP Circuit calendar, drawing thousands of players and fans each year. The return of the event to its birthplace is being seen as a symbolic full circle moment for the poker world. New look, same prestige Since the Circuit's last visit, Harrah's has undergone extensive renovations. Caesars highlighted that all hotel rooms and suites have been modernized, enhancing the resort experience for guests. The property boasts an array of attractions including the nightlife hotspot The Pool After Dark, a state-of-the-art spa, and several high-profile dining options featuring celebrity chefs such as Gordon Ramsay, Bobby Flay, Guy Fieri, and Buddy Valastro. The poker room at Harrah's, containing 28 tables, remains one of the busiest in the region, offering a wide variety of games and daily tournaments. It operates nearly around the clock, with extended weekend hours catering to serious grinders and casual players alike. What's next for the WSOP Circuit The Atlantic City stop is part of the 2025-26 WSOP Circuit season, which will kick off in late July following the conclusion of the annual WSOP in Las Vegas, held at the Horseshoe and Paris casinos. The full schedule of Circuit stops is expected to be released in the coming weeks. Despite the WSOP's sale to NSUS Group last year - a $500 million deal combining cash and a promissory note - Caesars retains operational control of both the WSOP Circuit and the flagship Las Vegas tournament. NSUS, the parent company of GGPoker and GGNetwork, has agreed to allow Caesars continued usage of the WSOP brand for at least the next 20 years. As part of the agreement, Caesars properties will enjoy preferential rights to host WSOP-C events, ensuring that Harrah’s Atlantic City is likely to remain a key stop on the tour for years to come. For poker players and fans in the Northeast, the return of the WSOP Circuit to Atlantic City is more than just another tournament - it's a homecoming. With upgraded accommodations, premier gaming, and a legacy that stretches back to poker's modern beginnings, Harrah's is all set to deliver an unforgettable experience.

Pennsylvania Now Joins Poker Multi-State Gaming Agreement

Pennsylvania Now Joins Poker Multi-State Gaming Agreement

The state of Pennsylvania has now joined New Jersey, Michigan, Delaware, Nevada, and West Virginia in the MSIGA. The Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement for the game of poker has existed for a number of years, but it is only now that Pennsylvania has come into the fold, with the move designed to give more freedom and choices to over 150K poker players in the state. Governor Josh Shapiro today announced a major expansion in Pennsylvania’s online gaming market, officially signing an agreement to join the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement, or MSIGA. This strategic move allows the Commonwealth to become the sixth member of the shared internet poker network, offering more choice, freedom, competition, and economic opportunity for Pennsylvania's estimated 150,000 online poker players. A major step forward for online poker players By joining the MSIGA, Pennsylvania aligns with the states of Michigan, New Jersey, Delaware, Nevada, and West Virginia, enabling online poker players across state lines to compete against one another on shared platforms. This agreement increases the combined pool of players by more than 50% and creates the largest single market for regulated online poker in the United States, encompassing more than 38 million residents. Governor Shapiro called the decision a 'commonsense step' that balances consumer freedom with smart economic growth. "This is a commonsense step to support hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvanians, grow our economy, and bring in more revenue to support our schools, our seniors, our small businesses, and more," stated Governor Shapiro. He continued, "Three of our neighbors are already part of this agreement - and with this action today, we're making sure Pennsylvania remains competitive in a rapidly growing online market." Benefits to players and the economy For players, joining the multi-state network means access to larger tournament prize pools, increased player competition, and a more dynamic online experience - all without raising the cost of entry. Games will be hosted on licensed, fair, and thoroughly tested platforms, ensuring integrity and player protection. Poker players across the Commonwealth have long advocated for MSIGA membership. Advocates cited improved competition, better protections for players, stronger support for smaller online operators, and a way to combat unregulated and illegal gambling as key motivations. Pennsylvania's online poker platforms, including PA Borgata Online and BetMGM, will begin offering multi-state poker games starting on the 28th of April, 2025, with additional operators expected to launch shortly thereafter. Strengthening Pennsylvania's gaming sector With 22 licensed online gaming platforms and 17 retail casinos, Pennsylvania's gaming industry employs more than 15,000 people and stands as a cornerstone of the Commonwealth's economy. Legalized gambling in Pennsylvania generates nearly $2.7 billion annually in tax revenue, ranking it first in the nation among commercial gaming states. These revenues are funneled back into communities in a variety of impactful ways - from reductions in school property taxes to agricultural community investments to grants for local projects across all 67 counties. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board will oversee the integration of the multi-state poker system, working closely with other state regulators and online operators to ensure a smooth and secure rollout. Maintaining momentum in a competitive market As more states modernize and expand their online gaming frameworks, Pennsylvania's move to join MSIGA is viewed as both a strategic and timely decision. With neighboring states like New Jersey, Michigan, and West Virginia already enjoying the benefits of shared liquidity pools, today's agreement ensures Pennsylvania remains a leader in regulated online gaming in the United States. For the Commonwealth's poker enthusiasts and for its growing digital economy, the future is now significantly brighter. For more information, visit the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board website or follow updates from the Governor's Office.

Caesars Palace and Planet Hollywood to Relocate Poker Rooms Away from Casino Floor

Caesars Palace and Planet Hollywood to Relocate Poker Rooms Away from Casino Floor

Just like the Venetian, which has moved its poker room off its casino floor, Planet Hollywood and Caesars Palace are reportedly following suit. According to reliable sources, Caesars Palace will open a new poker room inside the shops of the Appian Way, and this poker room will be half the size of its predecessor. Meanwhile, Planet Hollywood is also relocating its poker room in a previous event space, but it will double in size compared to its former poker room. Caesars Entertainment is breathing new life into two of its shuttered poker rooms, announcing plans to reopen poker facilities at Planet Hollywood and Caesars Palace this spring. The move comes amid a trend of Las Vegas casinos rethinking the location and scale of their poker operations in an era increasingly dominated by slot machine revenue. Caesars Palace's brand-new poker space According to reliable reports, Caesars Palace will unveil its new poker room on May 16 in a repurposed retail area within the Appian Way Shops. This upscale shopping corridor, located near the iconic Statue of David replica and Gordon Ramsay's Pub & Grill, is about five minutes from the main casino floor. Unlike its previous locations - both embedded within the casino - this poker room will be entirely off the gaming floor. The newly redesigned Caesars Palace poker room will feature just eight tables, making it half the size of its most recent predecessor. Despite the reduced footprint, there is potential for future expansion if the location proves successful in drawing steady foot traffic. This marks a significant downscale from the poker room's original incarnation, which once boasted a sprawling 63-table layout opposite the sportsbook before closing in 2014. The room was later moved to a smaller space near the Colosseum, with only 16 to 18 tables, before closing again in August 2024. At the time of its closure, Caesars had promised a temporary shutdown to make way for renovations in the high-limit slots area, with expectations of reopening within 90 days. However, that space has since been converted to accommodate lower-limit slots, casting doubt on poker's long-term value on the prime casino floor. Planet Hollywood's reorganization revealed In tandem with Caesars Palace's revival, Planet Hollywood's poker room is also set to return - this time with a larger and more ambitious setup. Closed since July 2021, the new Planet Hollywood poker room will more than double the size of its former operation. Set to open on May 2, it will occupy the former London Club space, a 4,800-square-foot private event area on the mezzanine level, just across from the wedding chapel. Unlike its original 10 to 12-table room located in the high-visibility Pleasure Pit area, the new venue will host 23 tables - 12 dedicated to cash games - while still offering a view of the casino floor below. The London Club space, dormant since the pandemic, was previously used for private parties and corporate events. A decline in popularity These strategic relocations reflect a growing trend among Vegas casinos, where poker is increasingly being moved away from high-revenue real estate. Following a similar move by the Venetian last August, which relocated its poker room to the Grand Canal Shoppes' second floor, Caesars appears to be prioritizing higher-yield gaming options like slot machines on its casino floors. While poker once enjoyed a meteoric rise during the early 2000s boom, the game has seen a steady decline in Las Vegas. Since the market began contracting around 2012, more than 40 poker rooms have permanently closed in the city. As of now, only 17 poker rooms remain operational. The most recent casualty was the Sahara's room, which closed in November 2024 - making it the seventh Strip poker room to fold in just five years. Despite poker's lower profit margins - relying on a modest "rake" rather than house-vs-player odds - its cultural significance and loyal player base still give it a place in the Las Vegas gaming landscape. With Caesars' latest move, fans of the felt will soon have two more places to play, albeit a bit further from the action.

DraftKings Launches Electric Poker in New Jersey

DraftKings has just launched Electric Poker in New Jersey, and it has brought a whole new excitement to players in the state. DraftKings first brought Electric Poker to players in Michigan and Pennsylvania, making New Jersey the third state where the title is played. DraftKings has officially introduced its groundbreaking Electric Poker game to the New Jersey market, making it the third state to receive the offering after Michigan and Pennsylvania. The company announced the introduction on Tuesday, marking another milestone in its rapid expansion within the iGaming sector. Electric Poker arrives in the Garden State Electric Poker has been well received in other states, prompting DraftKings to bring the unique game to New Jersey's thriving online poker landscape. Unlike traditional poker offerings, Electric Poker is integrated directly into the DraftKings online casino platform, requiring no additional login credentials or separate accounts. Jason March, Vice President of iGaming Marketing and Operations at DraftKings, expressed confidence in the game's potential in New Jersey. "Since launching Electric Poker in August, the reception from DraftKings Casino players has been very positive, leading to the expansion of the exclusive product to New Jersey," March said in a statement. "We're excited to be able to offer this exceptional title to more customers, delivering them a one-of-a-kind, innovative game and a first-class online poker experience." While New Jersey has hosted online poker for over a decade, the introduction of Electric Poker brings a fresh take on the game with its unique format and dynamic prize structure. Understanding Electric Poker's unique features Electric Poker is a unique take on traditional No-Limit Texas Hold'em standard rules but introduces a distinctive twist - randomized prize pools based on a multiplier system. According to DraftKings, the game operates as follows: "Electric Poker is a Hyper Turbo, three-handed No-Limit Texas Hold'em poker tournament played with one standard deck of 52 cards. The prize pool for the tournament will be determined based on a random draw before the start of each tournament and can be from 2x to 10,000x your buy-in ("Prize Pool Multipliers")." The fast-paced format includes blind levels lasting two minutes to maximize the number of hands played. Each tournament consists of three players in a jackpot sit-and-go format, with buy-ins reaching $1 to up to $25. The most enticing aspect of Electric Poker is its potential payouts. Prize multipliers can reach as much as 10,000x, meaning a $10 buy-in could yield a jackpot of up to $100,000 if the maximum multiplier is drawn. Revenue classification and gaming regulations Although Electric Poker is categorized as a poker game, it is accessible through DraftKings' online casino platform without requiring additional authentication. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board classifies Electric Poker revenue as online poker, and the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement has confirmed that it will follow the same approach. Electric Poker combines both banked as well as non-banked gaming elements. While long-term payouts align with player contributions minus rake - making it non-banked - the randomization of the payouts introduces short-term house-banked characteristics. New Jersey's competitive online poker scene New Jersey is home to a well-established online poker market, featuring multiple platforms that participate in the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement. This agreement allows poker operators to share player pools across state lines, enhancing competition and player engagement. The major platforms operating in New Jersey include: BetMGM, PokerWSOP, and PokerStars. In addition to these networks, the state also offers PartyPoker and Borgata Poker, further expanding options for players. The arrival of Electric Poker provides New Jersey players with a fresh and innovative poker experience. With its fast gameplay, unique prize structure, and seamless integration within DraftKings' casino platform, Electric Poker is expected to make a significant impact in the state's thriving iGaming market.

BetMGM Now Offers Poker for Michigan Players After Approval from MGCB

BetMGM has now become the third platform to offer interstate gaming for poker players in Michigan after it gained the approval from the Michigan Gaming Control Board. The platform joins the likes of WSOP and PokerStars. Michigan players will now be able to play with poker players from New Jersey via the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement. BetMGM, a major player in the online gaming sector, has gained regulatory approval to connect its online poker platforms across Michigan and New Jersey. With this green light from the Michigan Gaming Control Board, BetMGM becomes the third online platform to enable interstate poker in Michigan, joining PokerStars and the World Series of Poker (WSOP). In a statement released Wednesday, Executive Director for the MGCB Henry Williams expressed enthusiasm about the decision, highlighting the impact it will have on Michigan's online gaming landscape. "This authorization represents a significant step forward in the development of online gaming within our state boundaries," Williams said. "We are confident that the partnership with BetMGM will enhance the gaming experience for Michigan players and drive growth in the industry." The recent approval means that poker players in Michigan can now compete against players in New Jersey on a broader platform, benefiting from larger pools of participants and fostering a more engaging and competitive gaming experience. BetMGM's interstate player-sharing capacity follows a petition it submitted in late May, which was finally approved after an assessment of its Multi-State Poker Submission Form by the MGCB this week. The increasingly competitive landscape of interstate poker With Michigan's inclusion in the Multi-State Internet Gaming Agreement, which permits player liquidity sharing between six states, BetMGM joins a growing list of operators leveraging interstate poker connections. The MSIGA, established in 2014 by Nevada and Delaware, expanded to include New Jersey in 2017 and later welcomed Michigan in 2021. This cooperative effort now spans Michigan, Delaware, Nevada, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia, with the potential to link even more states in the future. BetMGM's entry into multistate poker puts it in direct competition with other major platforms operating in Michigan. PokerStars, in partnership with the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians, launched multistate play on the 1st of January, 2023. The WSOP followed in May of 2024, through collaboration with the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. Now, BetMGM brings its own player-sharing capabilities to the mix, adding a new level of choice for Michigan poker enthusiasts. BetMGM's interstate poker operations are backed by a partnership with MGM Grand Detroit, a property of MGM Resorts International. This alliance is supported by Entain, a UK-based gaming giant, which co-owns BetMGM as part of a joint venture with MGM Resorts. Through this network, BetMGM has built a foundation to offer diverse online gaming options, including slots, table games, and now, a robust interstate poker component. Boosting the iGaming market in Michigan and New Jersey Michigan and New Jersey represent two of the most lucrative online casino markets in the United States. For instance, from January through September 2024, Michigan's online casinos have generated over $1.75 billion in gaming revenue. New Jersey's internet casinos and poker platforms collectively raked in over $1.73 billion during the same period. According to the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, online poker has contributed significantly to New Jersey's gaming revenue, collecting around $21.3 million between January and September 2024. PokerStars led the New Jersey poker market, earning nearly $7 million in rake, followed by WSOP with $4.8 million, and a tie between Borgata and BetMGM at $2.9 million each. PartyPoker rounded out the top five with $1.5 million in revenue. Future prospects for online poker growth With BetMGM's interstate poker integration, Michigan players gain a broader range of competitive options, potentially revitalizing interest in online poker and providing the state's gaming industry with new avenues for growth. For now, BetMGM's interstate play is limited to New Jersey, but the success of this partnership could open the door for broader collaborations across additional states in the future. As Michigan and New Jersey continue to lead in the online gaming space, they set a precedent for the evolving role of regulated online poker in the United States. BetMGM's entry into the multistate poker realm reflects a growing trend toward player-sharing agreements that enhance gameplay, create stronger communities of players, and drive growth in the iGaming market.

New Virtual Poker Room Launched by Rush Street Interactive

Rush Street Interactive has just launched online poker through BetRivers Poker, and the launch comes on the heels of the RSI acquisition of Run It Once Poker in 2022. BetRivers Poker makes its debut in Pennsylvania, with various poker games and tournaments available. Rush Street Interactive, a major player in the online casino and sports betting industry, has officially launched BetRivers Poker, a real money poker platform for US players. This milestone follows RSI's acquisition of Phil Galfond's Run It Once Poker in March of 2022 for $5.8 million. Galfond, a well-known poker professional and founder of the original Run It Once platform, collaborated closely with RSI on BetRivers Poker, bringing years of player-first insights and innovations to the project. With this launch, the American online poker landscape receives a significant boost, adding an eagerly anticipated option for players. The collaboration with Galfond has resulted in a platform dedicated to fairness, rewards, and engagement for all types of players, from novices to seasoned professionals. "As poker players, we designed this platform from the ground up to be for the players - all players," Galfond stated in the official release. "I've been heavily involved in game design, promotions, policy decisions, and in building a team that sees online poker as I do. Our goal was to create a fair and rewarding experience that's exciting for everyone." Where to play BetRivers Poker The debut of BetRivers Poker in Pennsylvania marks the first phase of RSI's multi-state rollout plan, with expansions to other regions anticipated. Pennsylvanians can now sign up for BetRivers Poker and enjoy exclusive welcome bonuses. New players are eligible for a 100% match bonus of up to $1,000 using the code: POKER. Access to the platform is available through a desktop client compatible with Windows and Mac, and mobile apps for both iPhone and Android are slated for release in the near future. The site is designed to make the gaming experience accessible and engaging for players of all backgrounds. Unique features and poker games BetRivers Poker has been built with an emphasis on user-friendly innovations inspired by Run It Once Poker. Among these is the HeroIQ HUD, an integrated 'Heads-Up Display' that offers insights into gameplay patterns without the need for third-party software. Players can also benefit from randomized screen names and fair play auto-seating, which are aimed at leveling the playing field. One of the standout features is the dynamic avatar system, which changes in response to players' in-game actions. These avatars give visual cues about opponents' play styles, adding a new layer of engagement to the poker experience. For game formats, BetRivers Poker offers a variety of options, including Sit & Go tournaments, cash games, and Multi-Table Tournaments. Also debuting on the platform are Cub3d Sit & Go Tournaments, a high-speed, spin-and-go style format where players have the chance to multiply buy-ins to as much as 1,500 times within minutes. This format promises quick thrills and substantial payout opportunities. In Pennsylvania, BetRivers Poker aims to provide some of the smallest rake rates in the market, making it more appealing for players looking to maximize value. The platform also connects seamlessly with the iRush Rewards program, a popular loyalty scheme that spans both retail and online environments. Players earn and redeem points across various gaming options, further enhancing engagement and incentives for loyal customers. Bridging online and retail poker experiences An integral part of RSI's vision for BetRivers Poker is to unify online and in-person poker experiences. Through its partnership with Rivers Casinos in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, RSI is bringing new benefits to both retail and digital poker environments. This integration will allow players to access exclusive promotions and seamlessly transition between online and live poker settings. Richard Schwartz, CEO of RSI, expressed enthusiasm about this cross-channel approach. "Our goal is to create a seamless experience for players, bridging the gap between the BetRivers digital and Rivers Casino offerings," Schwartz noted. "By aligning with Rush Street Gaming's strong retail presence, we are able to leverage our combined strengths to offer a truly unique poker experience that benefits players and drives growth across our entire portfolio." Tim Drehkoff, CEO of Rush Street Gaming, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the value for players. "This launch reinforces our commitment to offering Rivers Casino's guests a wide variety of gaming options. By integrating online and in-person poker, we're not only enhancing the player experience but also providing a seamless loyalty and rewards program," he said. "We're committed to continuing to innovate and provide value to our players." With BetRivers Poker, RSI is charting a new course in the US online poker space, combining Galfond's player-focused insights with its own extensive resources and retail footprint. For Pennsylvania players, this new launch represents just the beginning of an experience that's expected to grow both in features and reach across the country.

Sahara Set to Close Poker Room, Will Replace with Slot Machines

Sahara Set to Close Poker Room, Will Replace with Slot Machines

The Sahara is all set to make a change on November 16 as it closes its poker room for the last time and will put slot machines in its place. The closing of its poker room makes the Sahara the 7th casino on the Vegas Strip to do so, following the likes of the Excalibur, Harrah's, Planet Hollywood, and the Flamingo. The Sahara Hotel and Casino will close the doors to its poker room for the last time on the 16th of November, replacing it with an expanded slot machine area, marking the latest chapter in Las Vegas's evolving gaming landscape. By mid-December, the casino will debut 'enhanced offerings,' including new slot banks featuring "the latest test games from top gaming content providers," according to a statement from Sahara's General Manager, Paul Hobson. This shift showcases the trend among casinos on the Vegas Strip prioritizing high-revenue-generating gaming options over poker, which has seen a gradual decline in casino support over the past decade. The closure of the Sahara poker room: a growing trend This closure will make the Sahara the seventh casino on the Strip to permanently shut down its poker tables in the last five years, joining a list of properties that have redirected space once dedicated to the game. The trend began in March of 2020 when Excalibur closed its poker room as the pandemic hit. While initially described as a temporary closure, Excalibur later repurposed the area for slot tournaments. Following suit, the Mirage and the Tropicana also closed their poker rooms around the same time without reopening them. In June of 2020, Harrah's converted its poker room into a nonsmoking slot area, eventually transforming it again into space for electronic table games. By mid-2021, Planet Hollywood and the Flamingo had also closed their poker rooms, allocating the spaces to slot machines, sports fan zones, and other gaming offerings. The trend away from poker is not unique to the Strip. Other Las Vegas casinos, including the Cannery, Binion's, Club Fortune, and Silver Sevens, have also closed their poker rooms in recent years. Even Green Valley Ranch transitioned its poker space into a sports viewing area, demonstrating a shift toward options that generate more revenue per square foot than poker. The financial perspective: slots over poker While poker continues to draw a dedicated following, it no longer enjoys the mainstream popularity it did twenty years ago. Still, the game remains active, with many rooms on the Strip reported to be half-full each night. In fact, the Sahara itself has continued to host four poker tournaments every day, suggesting steady interest. However, from a revenue standpoint, poker does not yield the same financial benefits for casinos as slot machines or table games. Poker, unlike most casino games, does not provide an inherent edge to the house. Casinos earn income through rake from tournament fees or a tiny percentage from each pot in cash games. However, this revenue model is less lucrative than the profits generated by slots or table games, which provide a higher revenue per square foot, a critical factor for Las Vegas casinos. Additionally, poker rooms tie up space and staff resources for extended periods, as players often engage in hours-long games, reducing opportunities for other patrons to gamble on the main floor. This drive to maximize profits is also reflected in many casinos' recent push to replace buffets with higher-margin food halls. Once a staple of the Las Vegas experience, the traditional buffet has been phased out across many properties. The logic is similar: buffets generate lower returns compared to upscale food halls, which offer curated dining experiences at a higher price point. Like poker rooms, buffets are seen as using prime casino real estate that could otherwise be allocated to more profitable ventures. As more casinos close their poker rooms, even venues that retain them have started moving these spaces away from the main gaming floor. Earlier this year, the Venetian transferred its poker room to a secluded spot on the Grand Canal Shoppes' second floor. What's next? Rumors of Caesars' poker room closing With Sahara's upcoming poker room closure, some industry insiders speculate that Caesars Palace could be next. Caesars Palace, which has maintained a poker room since it first opened in August of 1966, closed its room in August 2024 to expand its high-limit slot area but has yet to announce a reopening date. If Caesars ultimately decides to remove poker from its property, it would be the fourth property of Caesars Entertainment to do so in just five years, following the closures at Harrah's, Planet Hollywood, and the Flamingo.

DraftKings Debuts Electric Poker in Michigan

DraftKing has unveiled its latest offering: Electric Poker, exclusively for Michigan online casino players. Electric Poker is designed with a unique twist on standard poker, where players can compete against each other head to head in a no-limit Hold'em game instead of competing against the house, promising more fast-paced excitement. In a wise move to solidify its presence in Michigan's online poker market, DraftKings Casino has introduced an innovative game, Electric Poker, exclusively for its Michigan players. The game, which has debuted in the DraftKings Michigan online casino lobby, offers a unique twist on conventional casino games, aiming to captivate the state's poker enthusiasts. Electric Poker - a unique twist on traditional poker Unlike traditional online poker or other casino offerings where players compete against the house, Electric Poker allows registered members to face off in a no-limit Hold 'em tournament. This peer-to-peer competitive format sets it apart from other games available on the platform, giving players an even more dynamic and engaging experience. Electric Poker is a fast-paced variation of the classic 3-handed No-Limit Texas Hold 'em poker game, known for its swift gameplay and high-stakes potential. Players are drawn in by the attraction of a notable 10,000x prize, which represents the maximum win in a winner-take-all competition. Additionally, other prize multipliers include substantial 100x as well as 1,000x payouts, with 5x plus 10x multipliers designated for the tournament's runner-up. These enticing rewards are designed to enhance the competitive nature of the game, making every hand a potential winner. Fast-paced and action-packed The tournament format is structured to be brief, often lasting just a few minutes, which adds to the game's appeal for those seeking quick, adrenaline-fueled sessions. With low buy-ins of only $1, $5, $10, and $25, DraftKings is clearly targeting casual players who want to experience the thrill of poker without a significant financial commitment. This approach is in line with the operator’s broader strategy to make online gaming accessible to a wider audience. In order to participate in Electric Poker, players in Michigan must update their DraftKings Casino app to its latest version. This requirement ensures that all users have access to the most up-to-date features and security measures, which is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the game. The poker scene in Michigan: alive and thriving Michigan's online poker scene is already competitive, with established platforms like PokerStars, BetMGM, and WSOP catering to the state's poker players since 2021. However, Electric Poker's availability directly through the DraftKings Michigan app gives it a distinct edge over its competitors, which typically require players to download separate apps just for poker. This seamless integration could be a game-changer, as it offers players easy access to poker alongside other popular casino games, all within a single platform. Another noteworthy aspect of Michigan's online poker market is the player pooling allowed by the Michigan Gaming Control Board with other states like New Jersey and Nevada. However, at the time of Electric Poker's launch, the game is only available to Michigan players, meaning it does not yet benefit from cross-state player pooling. This exclusivity could either limit or enhance its appeal, depending on how DraftKings decides to expand the game in the future. DraftKings Casino's entrance into the online poker space in Michigan comes at a time when the operator is already a formidable player in the state's iGaming market. As the third-best operator in MI by revenue, DraftKings recently joined an elite group of operators surpassing the $1 billion milestone in lifetime revenue. The introduction of Electric Poker proves DraftKings' commitment to enhancing its gaming portfolio and expanding its reach within the online poker community, which is ever-growing in the Great Lakes State.
