It is still a disrespect that the Dallas Mavericks aren’t even in the top three in the best odds for winning the NBA Finals, but it cannot be denied that the team is one of the biggest contenders in the game and has a strong chance to win the league title. With Dallas making some good moves in the offseason, many are expecting to see them to make a dash back to the NBA Finals once more.

The Dallas Mavericks made the most of their chances last season and have also proven their worth on the big stage. The last time they made the Finals before last year was in 2011, where the team claimed its first championship under the lead of Dirk Nowitzki as they defeated the acclaimed big three of the Miami Heat. But will Dallas be able to repeat and deliver a massive victory this season after falling short last year?

Previous Season in Review

It has taken Dallas a long time to return to playoff contention ever since the Luka Doncic era began. So far, that has been seen in multiple first-round exits and a lone Western Conference Finals appearance in 2022. Dallas would then go on to stun the fans in the league last season after coming up a late rally that would send them to the upper echelon of the Western Conference.

So far, the Mavericks went on to dismantle the big four of the Los Angeles Clippers in six games, proving that they are indeed ready for some intense playoff action now more than ever. They also avenged two straight first-round exits in that series, and they sustained the same momentum in their semis series, narrowly beating the Oklahoma City Thunder in their series in six games as well. Dallas would go on to pull off an easy win against the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games, only to fall short in the NBA Finals and lose to the Boston Celtics in the same number of games.

Luka Doncic’s scoring has been out of this world so far, and it cannot be denied that it was his antics that proved to be crucial in delivering Dallas a trip to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2011. Now that he has a taste of the big stage, the MVP-less Luka is now expected to take a much bigger leap in his games and even try to come up with a much more promising season where he can lead the Mavs to a finish at the top spot, and hopefully bring them to the NBA Finals once more.

Then there’s Kyrie Irving, who was once thought to be a dilemma for Doncic considering that they are both ball-dominant players. The star guard proved that he has what it takes to adjust his game when needed, and it does seem that he has made that look easy for the team with the way he blended well with Doncic. At this point, it is easy to expect that Irving will continue guiding the rest of the Mavericks heading into the season.

Potential Starting Five in Hindsight

The Mavericks are expected to have some changes in their starting lineup this season, considering the fact that they have lost Derrick Jones Jr., Josh Green, and Tim Hardaway Jr. in free agency and trades. But it is expected that they will work around the likes of Spencer Dinwiddie, Quentin Grimes, Naji Marshall, and Klay Thompson heading into the season. Here’s what will be the projected Dallas lineup look like this year.

Dallas Mavericks: Projected Starting Five + Stats

Position Name Points Rebounds Assists
PG Luka Doncic 33.9 9.2 9.8
SG Kyrie Irving 25.6 5.0 5.2
SF Klay Thompson 17.9 3.3 2.3
PF PJ Washington 11.7 6.2 1.5
C Daniel Gafford 11.2 6.9 1.6

It is worth noting that Dallas may opt to bench Dereck Lively II considering that he is the second center in the rotation. On top of that, the Mavericks will have Dinwiddie come off the bench along with Grimes considering that they are expected to be the spark for the secondary unit of the squad. However, one can also expect a big-man lineup with Irving-Doncic-Thompson-Lively-Gafford in the mix instead.

Key Player to Watch

Klay Thompson image

While the Dallas Mavericks have made some interesting additions, it is worth noting that the team’s focus would be on how Klay Thompson would fit in the squad, and if Quentin Grimes can actually be a reliable spark off the bench, which should greatly help their chances considering that scoring depth was seen as the main issue for their tough loss in the NBA Finals against the Celtics. Thompson has struggled mightily in the previous season with the Golden State Warriors – no one would dare forget that elimination game against the Sacramento Kings in the Play-In Tournament where the four-time NBA champion scored zero points on 0-10 shooting from the field.

Now that he is headed for greener pastures in the 2024-25 season, it does seem that the Mavs will be giving him a much better look as he will be embracing a spot-up shooter role and less ball rotation.

Grimes has been more productive in his games despite being traded in the middle of the season for the Detroit Pistons. However, it cannot be denied that he will be expected to come off the bench as a promising reserve and a spark plug for the team. Entering his fifth year in the game, it is expected that Grimes will have to make the most of his chance in the squad and probably earn some needed minutes in the game as well.

The Last Five Seasons

There are high expectations for the Mavericks this season image

The Dallas Mavericks have been one of the teams in the Western Conference who are seen as a strong playoff contender. Considering the fact that they have been indeed around the big campaigns over the years, the team has made it to the playoff stage in four out of the last five years, with the most recent one being a run to the NBA Finals. So far, the rough start in the playoffs in the early 2020s have proven to be worth it as they are now gunning their way to the big stage at this point.

Dallas Mavericks Record in the Last Five Years

Season Record Winning Percentage Result
2019-20 43-32 .573 Lost in First Round
2020-21 42-30 .583 Lost in First Round
2021-22 52-30 .634 Lost in West Finals
2022-23 38-44 .463 Missed Playoffs
2023-24 50-32 .610 Lost in NBA Finals

Dallas has reached the 50-win mark for the first time since the 2014-15 season, where they also finished with a 50-32 record. So far, Dallas has proven itself to be quite a fierce contender now more than ever, and one can say that it is their time to shine and deliver the massive win that fans have been waiting for. After all, they have unfinished business to settle at this point.

What to Expect from the Dallas Mavericks in the 2024-25 Season?

The previous season was proof that Dallas did not have any problems in keeping two high-volume scorers in its backcourt, and it means that the Mavs are definitely poised for some impressive runs this year with the hopes of coming up with a league title win – definitely a chance for Luka Doncic to prove that it is his time to dominate in the NBA now more than ever.
