Spencer Dinwiddie makes his return to the Dallas Mavericks for the second time in his career as he seeks to help the Mavs come up with an NBA title after falling short in the NBA Finals last June. Now the forward reunites with familiar faces in the roster heading into his 11th NBA season.

The Dallas Mavericks are making some impressive upgrades in their squad this offseason by bringing in Dinwiddie into the squad. The former Los Angeles Lakers forward is expected to play a huge role in the team’s rotation heading into the coming games of the 2024-25 season. So far, this is a confident move for the Mavs to ensure they maintain a competitive roster.

Having Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving at the helm guarantees a promising run for the team, but to increase their chances of winning, Dallas has made some impressive signings and additions to the roster, with Dinwiddie capping it off as the final signing for the team.

A New Groove for Dinwiddie

Spencer Dinwiddie was traded back to the Brooklyn Nets along with Dorian Finney-Smith and three round picks in exchange for Kyrie Irving in 2023. He would be later traded after three days in exchange for Dennis Schroder and Thaddeus Young to the Toronto Raptors before he was waived by the team.

In two days after he was waived, Dinwiddie entered negotiations with the Los Angeles Lakers and was later signed to a one-year, league-minimum deal with the team. So far, Dinwiddie was held back with less minutes in the rotation, averaging 6.8 points in 24 minutes in the regular season.

He did score some impressive games with the team, where Dinwiddie managed to put up a team-high 26 points, 5 assists, and 2 rebounds to help the Lakers pull off a 150-145 victory over the Indiana Pacers. However, most of his games with LA ended up with him scoring less points and even having some limited performances due to rotation issues.

A Second Chance with Dallas

Back in his two seasons with the Dallas Mavericks, Dinwiddie has been a phenomenal player for the team, especially when he used to play second fiddle to Luka Doncic. He averaged 17.1 points and 4.9 assists in 76 games over parts of two campaigns. At the age of 31, it is clear that he still has what it takes to perform at a high level if given the chance.

Dinwiddie joins a promising and flexible backcourt that is filled by former Golden State star Klay Thompson, who was added via a sign-and-trade deal. Quentin Grimes is also showing some good signs in his game after being acquired via a trade with the Detroit Pistons. So far, this just means that the team is ready to take on a challenging game next season where they hope to win big.

The Dallas Mavericks fell short of winning an NBA title for the first time since 2011. The Maves lost to the Boston Celtics in five games. Adding Dinwiddie provides some firepower off the bench – which is something that they did not have in the previous campaign. With Luka Doncic expanding his horizons in the game and Kyrie Irving recovering from a hand injury, it does seem that they will still enter the 2024-25 season with a force ready to take on the challenge to the top of the league.
