Not many wide receivers get to rack up a lot of impressive numbers in their second year in the NFL given how tough their jobs are, or how hard it is to come up with a promising quarterback who can activate the rest of his teammates. Lucky for Zay Flowers, this isn’t a problem as he is coming off one the most prolific seasons ever by a WR in the NFL.
Now heading into his third season with the Ravens, it seems that there are high expectations set before the wide receiver as he now shakes off the rookie feels and the adjustment period. After two stunning seasons with Baltimore, Flowers is expected to ascend to a bigger level of play with the team, and many fans hope that he can exceed those.
For a wide receiver who’s paired with an MVP-caliber player in Lamar Jackson, the best is indeed expected, and no one can say that Flowers is not shining in his own – he is making his mark in the game as well. At this point, he is definitely due for a breakout campaign now more than ever.
Building Off a Massive Season
Looking at Flowers’ 2024 run, it is definitely an impressive mark to look out for. The wide receiver just logged the first 1,000-yard campaign of his career, finishing with a total of 1,059 yards on 74 catches despite missing out on the playoff run due to a knee injury. At this point, one can say that the Ravens missed his elite presence when they ran into the Bills in the postseason.
Considering that the Ravens are a run-first club, think about all the massive possibilities he could explore with the team. Flowers has seen a total of 116 targets in the previous season alone, finishing 23rd in that regard. That puts him just behind Terry McLaurin (117) and Calvin Ridley (120) in the league overall.
"We've just got to get him the ball more," Ravens OC Todd Monken said. "I mean, that's really it. The problem is we have a lot of those guys. He's an unbelievable football player. He's not only an outside receiver that has elite route-running skills, but he's unbelievable with the ball in his hands. So you have, like, a guy that fits two positions, really plays two spots.”
Flowers has been used in different roles to get the ball, and that has certainly played a role in cranking up his catch volume. At this point, he is expected to take a leap on his consistency with the team.
Can He Stay Healthy?
Of course, the only thing that has kept him from peaking at a high level is his injuries. Flowers missed out on the two postseason games for the Ravens, but now he believes that he is ready to take on the challenge and run it back this season. And hopefully – stay healthy all the way to the playoff run for the team.
"My knee is great," Flowers said of his health. "I feel 100%. I feel like I'm ready to go, feel like I'm ready for the season. No limits. I'm good."
At the age of 24, everything is just slated to get better for Flowers, and this is the prime chance for him to take the huge leap in Year 3 that everyone has been talking about now.
