The rewards program of Royal Caribbean, Club Royale, has become a bit more restrictive. This month, the cruise line will make amendments to its free cruises: it will no longer give away free cruises for 2 - instead, the gambler will still receive a free cruise and a companion will be surcharged.

Royal Caribbean International, renowned for its exceptional cruise experiences, has made notable changes to its Club Royale casino rewards program. As of this month, the cruise line has adjusted the terms for its complimentary casino cruises, introducing a companion fare for most trips that were previously entirely free for two passengers.

Club Royale revisions

Club Royale is Royal Caribbean's loyalty program tailored for patrons of its onboard Casino Royale venues. The program has been a major draw for gambling enthusiasts, offering lucrative benefits including complimentary cruises. However, the recent overhaul means that these perks are no longer as inclusive as before.

Previously, Club Royale participants at the Prime or higher tier levels were entitled to an annual complimentary cruise for two passengers. The only additional costs were standard taxes and fees. Now, the free cruise extends primarily to the rewards member, with a discounted fare applied to a companion.

This change, which took effect in December, also impacts solo travelers. Members traveling alone on a double-occupancy stateroom for a comped cruise must now pay the discounted fare for the absent second passenger. The specifics of the companion fare discount remain unclear, with Royal Caribbean yet to disclose how much of a reduction is applied to the second traveler's cost.

Earning points for perks

Despite the revised structure, the Club Royale program continues to offer appealing incentives for loyal gamblers. For example, comped cruises for Club Royale members now start at 1,500 tier credits instead of the previous 2,500. Members who accumulate 3,000 or more points are still eligible for free trips for two passengers, including balcony staterooms based on availability.

Points in the Club Royale system are earned through gambling activity:

  • Slot Machines: One point for every $5 wagered.
  • Video Poker: One point for every $10 wagered.
  • Table Games: Points depend on the type of game, duration of play, and average bet.

For a guaranteed balcony stateroom, members need to amass 3,000 tier credits. A junior suite starts at 9,000 points, while a grand suite requires 25,000 points.

Increased gaming popularity

Royal Caribbean's Casino Royale offerings have grown increasingly popular, especially since the cruise line announced in June of 2023 that it would convert many 'Jazz on 4' lounges into smoke-free gaming areas. At the moment, all 26 Royal Caribbean ships feature Casino Royale, with standout venues like the 18,000-square-foot casino aboard the Allure of the Seas housing over 450 slot games and dozens of live dealer table games.

The smoke-free casinos on ships like the Allure, Harmony, Oasis, Symphony, and Wonder of the Seas provide an enhanced gaming environment for non-smoking patrons, contributing to the growing popularity of Royal Caribbean's gaming amenities.

Comparisons with other programs

While the adjustments may be disappointing for some Club Royale members, Royal Caribbean's rewards program remains competitive in the industry. Members of other casino loyalty programs, such as Unity by Hard Rock and MGM Rewards, can similarly exchange points for complimentary cruises or discounted rates.

The changes to Royal Caribbean' Club Royale program reflect an effort to balance rewarding loyal casino patrons with operational considerations. While the introduction of a companion fare marks a shift away from the previously all-inclusive offering, the program still provides significant value for dedicated gamblers. As casino gaming continues to gain popularity and traction aboard Royal Caribbean ships, the revised rewards structure is all set to maintain interest while adapting to evolving market dynamics.
