Ellis Island Casino & Hotel, once known as a dive bar in Vegas, is undergoing a much-awaited renovation. The property will receive a facelift and will feature an expanded gaming floor, a new bar, a new rooftop and event space, and a pit area.

Ellis Island Casino Hotel is shaking off its 'dive' reputation with a sweeping $35 million renovation, bringing a polished, modern aesthetic to one of Las Vegas's longstanding family-owned properties. The first official renderings, released Monday, showcase a fresh new look that veers away from its former image of dive bars, $5 blackjack tables, and casual barbecue joints. The new Ellis Island aims for a look more aligned with top-tier resorts like Wynn Resorts than its earlier reputation as a budget-friendly local favorite.

Originally opened as the Village Pub in 1968 by Frank Ellis Jr., Ellis Island evolved into a full-scale casino in 1973 under the ownership of Frank's son, Gary Ellis. Over the years, it earned a reputation as a casual and affordable spot for locals and tourists seeking straightforward dining and budget-friendly gaming options. This latest renovation is the most significant overhaul in the property's 56-year history.

The initial reactions to the renderings shared on social media underscore the community's mixed feelings. Twitter user @lizzie3420552 commented, "It's no longer the little dump with cheap and good food," highlighting the shift away from its classic charm. Others were more lighthearted about the update. "As) long as steak and eggs stay at $9, they can do anything they want lol," joked user @picazo_198.

A visionary transformation: what's changing?

The property's facelift includes a significant expansion of the gaming area, extending it out to Koval Lane, with more than 250 new slot machines and an additional gaming pit area planned. Central to the new layout is a redesigned casino bar, set to be a focal point of the upgraded floor. A rooftop bar and event space will also be added, providing guests with scenic views and a versatile space for entertainment and private events.

The existing casino floor, Village Pub & Cafe, and its ever-popular karaoke lounge will all see substantial upgrades, blending the property's legacy with modern design elements. According to Vice President of Development Christina Ellis, daughter of Gary Ellis, the renovations are intended to elevate the guest experience while staying true to the values that have made Ellis Island a beloved fixture on Koval Lane.

"We are very excited to have this project underway," Ellis said in a press release. "The city is growing, and we are eager to expand our offerings while staying true to what has kept us a staple on Koval Lane for 56 years, with great value dining, gaming, and amenities."

Staying true to its roots

Despite the comprehensive upgrades, the Ellis family is keen to preserve what has endeared the casino to its loyal patrons. Known for offering some of the best-value meals on the Strip, such as their famed $9 steak and eggs, Ellis Island Casino has built a reputation on affordable dining options, a rarity among casinos in a city often associated with high prices and luxury. Christina Ellis's statements suggest that while the aesthetics and facilities will evolve, the commitment to accessible, high-value dining and entertainment will remain at the core of Ellis Island's identity.

While no official timeline has been announced for the completion of the renovations, anticipation is building as locals and visitors alike look forward to the revamped venue. Some regulars express hope that Ellis Island will keep its signature offerings intact, even with the upscale changes.

A new chapter for a classic Las Vegas icon

The $35 million investment marks a new era for Ellis Island, aiming to balance tradition with transformation. The casino's decision to step up its game with a refined, high-end feel is a testament to Las Vegas's dynamic market, where properties continuously evolve to meet changing expectations while also preserving their unique character. This renovation signals that Ellis Island Casino Hotel is ready to compete with the city's more luxurious options, all while keeping its welcoming charm and value at the forefront.
