As the Juan Soto saga ended with the New York Mets being the winners, it does seem that this offseason was starting to look like a failure for the Boston Red Sox – who are yet to cash in a big name with their money in the bank. However, there are plenty of talents who are ripe for the taking, and that’s what they had in mind when they brought in Garrett Crochet via trade.

Crochet is a player who is under contract with the Chicago White Sox – at least until the 2026 season. If anything, Boston just did Chicago a favor by taking a big player’s expiring bankroll deal out of their hands – and replacing them with some interesting prospects who may actually turn out as impressive performers if they play their cards right.

Considering that Crochet is quite a talent to look out for, one can say that he is expected to be the new ace in town who will bring the Red Sox into a new dawn. After all, the club owes its fans to get back into contender status – and that seems to be quite a daunting task that they will have to focus on in the long run.

A New Perspective

The Red Sox certainly went off their way and philosophy of not trading away any of its base prospects – sending away a flurry of talents in Kyle Teel (No. 25 overall prospect), Braden Montgomery (No. 54 overall), Chase Meidroth (BOS No. 11 prospect), and Wikelman Gonzalez (BOS No. 14 prospect).

Considering that the Chicago White Sox are on the rebuilding side of the league, especially after losing a record-setting total of 121 games last season, it is safe to say that they are in dire need of prospects – thus making this trade perfect with Crochet already mulling options to play for a winner.

Coincidentally, the Red Sox are transitioning into that winner, but they’re just getting started to get on that winning part.

“We feel like we got a legitimate number one starter in Garrett, left-handed, ton of swing and miss, massive strikeouts, and feels like the best is still in front of him,” said Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow. “So we're excited about what he brings. And obviously, we needed to trade really good players in order to be able to do this. But that's the cost right now and we're very much focused on what we were able to get.”

Can History Repeat Itself?

Eight years ago in the same set of Winter Meetings, the Boston Red Sox would go on to trade for an ace lefty pitcher in Chris Sale. Of course, this would go on to become the historic Boston season as they went on to win the World Series by the end of the season – signalling the team’s rise to contention back then.

Crochet – another rising lefty ace in the game, is also brought into the Red Sox lineup via trade. The only thing left for this equation to be a promising one is for the Red Sox to win it all in the following World Series. But could that be a possible thing at this point in time?

The Boston Red Sox finished the 2024 season with a missed run to the playoffs, they certainly improved with a .500 win mark off an 81-81 record, but it wasn’t enough to propel them to the playoffs, with the team finishing third in AL East as well. But with Crochet around, maybe this is the time that they will turn things around now more than ever.
