Alex Ovechkin has come back healthy once more after a long break of games, in which he quickly returned to the lineup before 2024 ended. Now he’s in the mood for some goal-chasing game once more as he continues to bring in the thunder for the East-leading Capitals, ensuring that they will stay on the top while he keeps on bringing in more goals.

In the last three seasons, Ovechkin has been hell bent on delivering himself to the top of the scoring chain for the Capitals, scoring one blazing goal after another and showing that he’s already back to full form and is likely to come up with even more extensive performances to carry Washington to a bigger status in the East.

At this point, Ovechkin is just a few more games away from clinching the goal record in the season. He’s just 23 goals behind as of the time of writing, and there are indeed bigger expectations on how he will be able to put up some impressive games to keep on the climb now more than ever. Considering that he’s been really fast at putting up goals, it is safe to say that he may really just surpass Gretzky in either March or April.

Not Slowing Down Now

Ovechkin’s sole purpose in the league right now is to break the scoring record set by Wayne Gretzky. He’s already won a league title in 2018 with the Capitals, and he even managed to land the Conn Smythe Trophy, the Calder Memorial Trophy, and has been successful on multiple fronts – winning in the Kontinental Hockey League and even on the international stage.

At this point, all that’s left for him is to bring his name to the top of the NHL’s goal scoring list, and he may even call it a career afterwards. He’s already scored at least 20 goals in his 20 seasons in the league – and that broken left fibula did not even stop the veteran as the 39-year-old returned with vengeance and came on the attacking lanes quickly.

For former Caps head coach Peter Laviolette, Ovechkin’s dedication to the game is really unparalleled, and he continues to bring the best of his ame night in and night out. It is a unique work ethic that Ovechkin provides at this point, and one can say that he’s doing all in his power to leave his mark.

“He’s a guy that just doesn’t stop,” Laviolette said. “He wants to get better. He’s going to play hurt. He’s going to play injured. He’s going to get out there (and) he’s going to try and make a difference for his team.”

Washington Reaping the Benefits

As of the time of writing, the Capitals keep hold of the top spot in the Eastern Conference with a 26-10-3 record for 55 points. They are one of two teams to have a winning percentage of at least .700, the other team being the Vegas Golden Knights, who are the top team in the Western Conference.

Washington has been able to pull off impressive wins in Ovechkin’s return, and that’s a promising 3-2 record in the last five games since the star returned in December 28. At this point, one can say that the impact he makes has been really great for the Capitals, and one can expect to see more wins from Washington as they grind out their way for a promising campaign to the top once more – all while Ovechkin continues his chase for goals.
