Stunning MVP performances don’t always mean big victories for their respective teams, and that is what we have witnessed with Lamar Jackson coming up with a wild MVP game in the Baltimore Ravens’ clash with the Philadelphia Eagles, and yet they still came up short – leading to a 24-19 loss when it mattered most.
Jackson has been the leading pick in the NFL MVP odds this season so far thanks to his elite-level performances night in and night out. But after this loss to the Eagles, Jackson is now second on the odds list with +250, while Buffalo’s own Josh Allen now moves up on the list with +150 on the top odds to win.
At this point, it is hard to deny that Jackson has been an elite performer at this point in time, but now his team really needs to come up with victories if he is going to make a strong case for the MVP, which is clearly a factor in deciding MVPs to win the award by the end of the season. If Jackson is going to repeat, he has got to do better to avoid these close losses for the Ravens.
Missed Chance to Win
Baltimore started strong in the game and even had a 9-0 lead in the first quarter before squandering it all in the second quarter, where the Eagles would go on to take a 14-12 lead at halftime. However, neither team would manage to score in the third, until Philadelphia came alive in the fourth with a 21-12 lead to open up the final frame. Jake Elliot’s 35-yard field goal would lead them to 24 points, while a touchdown from Isaiah Likely sealed the final score at 24-19.
This was a comeback game for the Eagles. Baltimore filled the stat sheet in all facets, scoring a total of 372 yards coming off 206 passing yards and 166 rushing yards to the Eagles’ 252 total yards with 112 passing and 140 rushing.
Jackson finished with 237 yards and two massive touchdowns while going 23-36 in his passes. However, it was the impressive performance of Jalen Hurts – an efficient one – that led the way for the Eagles to soar over the Ravens, especially after he just finished with 118 yards total to go along with a touchdown and 11-19 on his passes.
Saquon Barkley on the Rise
While the bookmakers have already pinned Josh Allen at the top of the odds for weeks now, Jackson has managed to keep his pace on the second spot so far. However, the Eagles are also on the winning track, and it seems that Saquon Barkley’s rushing game has caught fire so far and it has lifted him behind Jackson in the MVP odds with +475 at best.
In this win, Barkley finished with 23 carries and scored 107 total yards, including a massive touchdown in the fourth quarter at 7:56 to bring the Eagles up 21-12. It has been an impressive season for Barkley so far, and it cannot be denied that his MVP case has been really convincing at this point with the way the Eagles are leading the charge.
Now more than ever, it is expected that the Eagles will find its groove in the season and stay on the winning track. They are set to play against the Carolina Panthers next week, while the Ravens have a good chance to come back from their loss with a game against the New York Giants.
