Being chased by a lot of clubs for most of the offseason, Juan Soto has finally ended the long wait after he has agreed to sign his talents for the New York Mets heading into the 2025 season and now gives the team a major boost in the odds. The team now seeks to make the most of its chances after making a lot of noise in the playoffs as well.
The Mets have been a different beast ever since Steve Cohen purchased the team in 2020. They have become a team that has been a constant threat in the field, but also a promising landing spot for the best stars in the game over the years. This has been proven by another massive signing with Soto being signed to a 15-year deal, which will see the former Yankees star play for the team for up until 2039.
Considering how Soto’s offseason has been hyped by many analysts, it is safe to say that the star will be definitely expected to come up with bigger strides in the coming campaign and deliver an elite performance to lift the Mets to a trip to the World Series once more – and hopefully win it all this time around.
A New Chapter for Soto
Soto’s deal with the Mets includes no deferrals and a single opt-out clause that comes after the 2029 season along with a $75 million signing bonus. This trumps the 16-year, $760 million offer that the Yankees handed for the star in hopes of keeping him for the next decade and beyond. At this point, it is safe to say that Soto never wanted to return to New York after falling short in the postseason.
This contract offered by the Mets to Soto marks the largest that the club has offered so far – doubling the amount of Francisco Lindor’s 10-year deal, which was capped at $341 million and was said to be the largest contract in Major League history – now Soto’s deal holds that distinction moving forward.
Soto hit a career-best 41 home runs with the Bronx Bombers in 2024. He also established single-season career highs in runs scored (128), extra-base hits (76) and bWAR (7.9). Those numbers respectively ranked first, fifth, and fifth in the American League, and it says a lot about how Soto’s value comes in as a promising boost for the Mets moving forward.
Rivalry Brewing for New York Clubs
The Mets were never contenders to sign Shohei Ohtani last offseason due to the star’s preferences, and so they pursued him well right from the start. The willingness to spend a lot of money surely brought in Soto, but the Mets’ roster potential also played a huge role, which is seen to be a promising contender for the World Series moving forward especially with Soto joining the team.
Now, this just means that there will be some bitter feelings to look out for in the coming season as the Yankees and Mets are set to battle next season with Soto being the highlight player of the game. The next clash between the two clubs will be May 16th on a Friday Night, where the Mets will collide against the Yankees at the Bronx.
The Subway Series just got fiery to watch, and this just means that there will be a lot of talk as to how the Mets will perform at a high level with Soto joining the squad now more than ever, while the Yankees seek to come up with new strides without Soto moving forward.
