Two years ago, Jalen Hurts sat in the locker room and was contemplating how the Eagles squandered a huge lead to lose to the Kansas City Chiefs by just three. Now, the Eagles just denied the Chiefs their supposed three straight Super Bowl wins, and they did it with a huge finish as they went on to win, 40-22.

Hurts had the confetti from Super Bowl LVII as his the lockscreen in his phone since then, and he has used that as a huge motivation to play better, take better accountability in his games, and lead his team to bigger heights. So when he had to play the Chiefs again, Hurts did not hold back his best game and outperformed Patrick Mahomes once more.

As opposed to their previous matchup, the Eagles entered the game as underdogs, and they made sure to add that as fuel to the fire. No words could best describe their elite performance in front of the crowd at the Superdome as they annihilated the Chiefs at every front, forcing them to give up the fight from start to finish.

Super Bowl LIX: As It Happened

Philadelphia started out strong as they pushed strongly led by Jalen Hurts, who had to battle extreme physicality right off the bat to score a touchdown and give Philadelphia a 7-0 lead. The Chiefs were repelled in their attempt as the Eagles’ defense smothered every attempt. Jake Elliott would score a field goal to make it 10-0, which was starting to turn the tide into the Eagles’ favor.

However, the Chiefs tried to spring life into its offense, and it seemed that Patrick Mahomes found an opening to DeAndre Hopkins, but instead, Eagles rookie Cooper Jean intercepted the ball and rushed from 38 yards to score a touchdown and make it a 17-0 lead in his birthday. Hurts would later throw another pass, and this time AJ Brown scored the touchdown to extend the lead to 24-0 heading into halftime.

The lead continued to swell for the Eagles in the third, and Jalen Hurts was being trapped by the defense, but his sharp eye would go on to spot an open DeVonta Smith, who caught the touchdown pass from the star QB to score a 46-yard touchdown followed by an extra point from Jake Elliott to make it a 34-0 lead – which seemed to be a dagger for the game.

The Chiefs did try their best to score at the very least, with Xavier Worthy scoring a 24-yard TD from Mahomes but could not convert an additional two points, ending the third at 34-6. Elliott scored two more field goals to make it a 40-6 lead in the fourth, and the rest of the starting squad opted to sit out the rest of the game, while the Chiefs scored two more touchdowns, including a 50-yard TD by Worthy from Mahomes – but was all too late to mount a comeback.

A Monumental Finish for Philadelphia

Jalen Hurts was named MVP with his 221 yards, two touchdowns in 17-22 attempts – while leading the team both in passing and rushing yards. However, it was the defense that won the game for the Eagles, who put up a total of six sacks on Mahomes – which was his career-worst and one shy of the Super Bowl record for most sacks.

The Chiefs were robbed of a Super Bowl championship for the third year in a row – it would have been the first in franchise history, and the first since the 1965-67 Green Bay Packers, and the first in the Super Bowl era. This now marks the second time that the Eagles have also defeated a Super Bowl team in the second time after losing in their first meeting, with the latter being against the New England Patriots in 2005 and 2018.

So far, Hurts has silenced all of his critics with a Super Bowl win. Many thought that he would come up short once more, and guess what? It definitely hurts to see him succeed for those who have doubted him.
