Set to enter the final year of his revised deal that was signed in 2024, Courtland Sutton now gets rewarded for his loyalty and impressive performances over the years with a new extension that will see him in the Broncos outfit for the next four years. Set to turn 30 in October, this kind of financial security is definitely a blessing for a player of his caliber.
The Broncos knew what they were doing when they were waiting on Sutton to appear in training camp before eventually landing a deal with him. It was expected to come this time with his final year with the team only having a base salary of $13.5 million, which is quite the number considering that he’s had a massive 2024 campaign with Denver.
It also comes as a promising nod to Broncos QB Bo Nix’s aspirations of becoming the best in the world, by pairing him up with one of the best receivers in the game for the next four years. They got an A+ deal done ahead of the season, and they have secured a promising player to play alongside their rising QB. That’s definitely a win-win for Denver at this point.
A Rewarding Extension
Sutton was a promising outlet for Nix in his rookie season, and he thrived on third downs with his impressive level of play. That was seen to be one of the biggest reasons why he deserved the $92 million extension that became a great signing bargain for the star. As one of the team captains in the squad, Sutton’s extension means that he will continue to lead them into the deeper runs that they are hoping to come up with this season and beyond.
For those who didn’t know, Sutton is the second-longest tenured player in the Denver roster, and has been one of the best players in the squad so far. He did show up for some training camps, but he stayed away from the voluntary camps before a new deal could be cooked up. After all, he made it clear that he did not want to play with his new deal heading to this season.
So when the Broncos offered the deal, they also included a performance incentive to his contract – which is an additional $1.5 million considering that he had one of the best seasons for a WR in the previous campaign.
Playing Off a Bounce-Back Run
Last season, Sutton came up with 1,081 yards and eight touchdowns – along with a career-high 81 catches. That was the first year that he had a tally over the 1,000-yard barrier since his breakout campaign in 2019. While the ACL tear he suffered in 2020 did not do him good in the succeeding years, 2024 proved to be a show of his supreme talent, even with his prime closing out.
Sutton has been the most-trusted target for Bo Nix in his rookie season. It was seen in a lot of situations where the playcaller opted to trust the receiver multiple times in various games even in contested situations, only to score a massive win at the end of the play.
On top of that, Sutton remains the leader for Denver in terms of targets, receptions, yards, and touchdowns. He has been consistent, and his form has been good, which all proves that he is going to be a prime performer for the Broncos alongside Nix in the coming campaign.
