Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy Shines in Preseason Runs
It is never easy to fit in any team’s offensive schemes, let alone in three-time Super Bowl winner head coach Andy Reid. However, it seems that Xavier Worthy has become a massive exception for those who are having a tough time settling in on the squad’s offensive role. That has left the Kansas City Chiefs well-impressed with their rookie so far.
And it is also worth noting that it is still just the preseason. The game is nowhere near the crucial games where offensive roles need to be understood well before the game actually begins. Worthy being able to adjust and learn his place in the offensive mix is clearly quite a strong show of hope that the Chiefs can actually have a promising offensive player on their hands heading into the season – where they hope to come up with a three-peat in the Super Bowl.
So far, the first-round pick for the Chiefs has been moving mountains, sprinting a lot of yards, and turning a lot of heads in his preseason games. That is one big reason to believe that the team has selected well in bringing the right piece that will allow the rest of the team to thrive at a bigger level at this point.
Meeting the Expectations
Before the draft, Worthy was one of the hyped players in the prospect list among potential rookies. He was acclaimed in college back in the day and was also praised for setting a 40-yard dash record at the NFL scouting combine. Worthy showed off that he can actually thrive in a system played by champions over the year. He was stellar in his drive against the Detroit Lions – with Worthy getting open before Patrick Mahomes nailed him with the 39-yard gain before eventually putting up a 22-yard score later on.
It is easy to say that Xavier Worthy is indeed one of the best players on the Chiefs’ roster right now, and it cannot be denied that his impressive level of play in the preseason is expected to translate to bigger returns in the coming games this season. By the end of the game, Worthy had 62 yards and an 11-yard run against Lions backups, and he showed that the Chiefs don’t really need to play him bit by bit and can definitely bring him up to speed in just a snap.
A “Worthy” Star in the Making?
So far, Worthy’s NFL debut has made headlines without him doing a whole lot of things asked of him. Despite the Chiefs losing it by one point, it does seem that Worthy is expected to come up with more improvement in the game as he continues to learn the ropes in the squad in the coming weeks with more football action on schedule.
"I’m definitely getting more comfortable understanding the bits and pieces of the offense," Worthy said. "So just getting familiar with that is really big. … I feel like really just kind of adapting the game speed, like I said before the season even started, before I came to camp, the biggest thing I'm gonna have to adapt to is the game speed. So now I feel like I'm getting more comfortable with the game speed and adapting a little bit more to it, so I feel like I'm doing really good.”
At this point, Worthy is impressing well like no other, and fans might well be ready to see him shine on the big stage soon enough, and he is ready to deliver bigger winning strides for the team heading into the season.
