All eyes are on the much-anticipated and much-talked about Caesars casino in Virginia, which is finally slated to open in the last quarter of 2024. The casino is slowly taking shape and is expected to add a broader impact to Virginia's casino sector, which already has 3 casinos at the moment, but none are as big or grand as this.

The much-anticipated casino from Caesars Virginia is on track to make a grand entrance into the state's entertainment landscape later this year. The project is set to open in the fourth quarter, as stated by Ray Dunkle, the director of gaming operations for the Virginia Lottery. During a recently-concluded meeting of the Virginia Lottery Board in Richmond, he voiced his excitement about the ongoing progress, stating, "The permanent casino, the construction there is moving great."

A witness to significant changes

The casino, located on the historic Schoolfield Mill site in Danville, is undergoing rapid transformation. Dunkle noted a substantial change in the appearance of the site which highlights the project's advancement. He stated that it looks a lot different, and "if we would go and stand in that same place right now, it would be a different look for sure." He further emphasized their commitment to meeting the targeted opening timeline.

In addition to the main construction, the temporary gaming facility, located in Danville, is also witnessing significant enhancements. Dunkle gave details about the new games and planned expansions, emphasizing the growth in gaming options at the interim setup. He said that they had approved 50 new games and 16 projects involving eight tables and 224 games. Currently, the tent-like temporary setting offers more than 30 table games and a total of 826 slot machines, providing a robust gaming experience while the full-scale casino is being completed.

An impressive growth trajectory in Virginia

The casino industry in Virginia has been experiencing impressive financial growth. The three casinos in the state, namely HR Bristol, Danville Casino, and Rivers Casino in Portsmouth, have collectively generated significant revenues, with the Danville facility playing a key role. According to the Virginia Lottery's director of finance, Deborah Courtney, these casinos made approximately $673.9 million in revenue for 2024. This marks a substantial increase from the $255.5 million in the previous fiscal year.

As is expected, the rise in revenue has also led to a sharp increase in tax contributions from the casino industry. Total tax revenue generated by the casinos reached $123.76 million this year, a significant jump from the almost $46 million recorded in 2023. The expanding financial footprint of the industry clearly shows the positive economic impact that these establishments are having across the state, with Danville's casino playing a vital role in this growth.

The profound role of Caesars Virginia

The Caesars Virginia project represents a key investment in the entertainment and economic landscape in Virginia. Initially estimated at $400 million, the total investment in the casino and hotel resort has now almost doubled to about $750 million. This substantial financial commitment shows the importance of the project to both Caesars Entertainment and the local community.

Also, while the projected number of jobs has been slightly adjusted, with estimates now ranging from 900 to 1,300 positions (as approved by the City Council), the project still promises vast economic benefits and employment opportunities for the area. The casino is well expected to become a cornerstone of the local economy, providing both direct employment and indirect benefits to surrounding businesses.

The Virginia Lottery, as the overall overseer, continues to monitor both the compliance and progress of the existing and new casinos under its care. Although representatives from Caesars Virginia have been somewhat reluctant to comment on the current developments in the sector, the momentum of construction and positive forecasts, especially financially, suggest that the casino will make a strong debut.
