With the 2024-25 NHL season barely beginning, it seems that there are speculations that Canadian teams are expected to come up with a competitive run to the top of the NHL world. But what does the odds actually say about their chances of winning all the way to the big stage of the NHL? Let us find out and see which teams have the best chance to prove their worth on the big stage now more than ever.
Canadian Teams on the Rise
In the 2023-24 season, not all Canadian teams managed to enjoy a promising campaign. In fact, only a total of three Canadian squads managed to make it to the Stanley Cup Playoffs. At this point, it cannot be denied that there are a lot of talks as to how the Canadian power in the NHL is slowly fading away, considering the fact that Canadian teams are considered to be dominant in the league over the years before the 2000s.
However, the offseason has seen some significant improvements across multiple Canadian teams, and it is worth noting that these teams are now expected to renew their chances of winning and improve their level of play this season. However, not all teams have what it takes to win, and the odds themselves say a lot about how Canadian power may be on the middle ground right now.
Canadian Team Odds to Win the Stanley Cup Final
As said above, the odds differ from time to time for various Canadian teams who are expected to deliver a championship run now more than ever. For this article, we are considering all Canadian NHL teams’ odds to win the Stanley Cup this season, based on the odds set before them and their performances from the previous season.
So which teams have the best shot at winning the Stanley Cup Final this year?
Edmonton Oilers (+850)
The Edmonton Oilers came close to winning the Stanley Cup Final last season, nearly making a 0-3 comeback against the Florida Panthers before they fell in Game 7. Still, it is worth noting that the Oilers are one of the teams that are expected to win it all this year after re-signing one of their big stars in Leon Draisaitl and keeping a competitive roster with respectable signings as well. So far, the Oilers stand with the best odds to win the Cup all over the league – even trumping the odds of the Panthers to begin the campaign. After finishing fifth in the West last season with a 49-27-6 record, it is expected that the Oilers will be gunning for a bigger spark in the game this time.
Vancouver Canucks (+2,300)
Despite finishing third in the Western Conference last season, the Vancouver Canucks seem to be on the attack as they are expected to continue contending for the top spot in the West. Considering that they finished with a 50-23-9 record in the previous campaign, one can say that the Canucks may have an impressive chance to deliver a massive run to the top of the Stanley Cup Final, considering that they haven’t won a single title over the years. As Quinn Hughes continues to reach his peak in stardom, it does seem that there are many expectations for the Canucks to keep on building a promising campaign of their own, especially after that rough exit at the hands of the Oilers of Game 7 in the second round.
Toronto Maple Leafs (+1,500)
Auston Matthews being named as captain seems to be quite the new look for the team at this point as he hopes to deliver them to the top of the playoff stage. The Toronto Maple Leafs do deserve to get a chance to prove themselves further, especially after being knocked out by the Boston Bruins in the first round in seven games. Finishing with a 46-26-10 record for the fifth seed last season, there are high hopes for the Canadian team to actually deliver a much better promise this season as they look to establish themselves as one of the firm contenders. This is a chance for the Maple Leafs to also break their title drought – not winning a single Stanley Cup since the 1966-67 season, which happened to be the era of dominance for Canadian teams.
Winnipeg Jets (+2,600)
No division championships, no Presidents’ Trophy, no conference championships, and definitely zero Stanley Cup wins, it is easy to say that the Winnipeg Jets are yet to see their full potential at this point in time. Still, after that first-round exit at the hands of the Dallas Stars where they just won a single game, the second-seeded Jets in the 2023-24 season is expected to find ways to win this year. The team did finish with a 52-24-6 record last run, and they are definitely eager to build on it if they are going to come up with a promising rally to the top of the game now more than ever. But first, the goal for them is to definitely secure the first seed in the West, then we’ll probably expect to see more of them on the rise at this point.
Ottawa Senators (+3,600)
Linus Ullmark’s squad is definitely way behind the competition after finishing 14th in the Eastern Conference last season. At this point, one can say that there are still some expectations from the Ottawa Senators as they seek to claw their way to the upper echelon of the Eastern Conference. One can say that the team’s hopes of winning rests upon the improvements that they will make on the season right now, and this is going to be indeed a much bigger standard that they can look forward to if they make the necessary adjustments. Right now, the Senators are expected to make some strides, but they will have to brave the rising competition in the East if they are going to beat the odds.
Calgary Flames (+17,000)
Finishing 11th overall in the Western Conference last season isn’t really quite a good note for a team that is aspiring to reach a bigger stage in the NHL at this point, and the Calgary Flames are yet to show that they are really consistent enough to bring a massive campaign. In the last five years, the Flames have been in an up-and-down state, making it to the playoffs twice before missing in back-to-back years. Last season? The team had a 38-39-5 record, and that did not pay off well as they sought to come back strong with the hopes of finally rewarding themselves with a championship for the first time since 1988-89. This season is their best chance to prove that they can be even better now more than ever.
Montreal Canadiens (+23,000)
The winningest Canadian team in the NHL is faring roughly among all the teams on this list, and it is hard to argue that the team with 24 Stanley Cup wins is now one of the worst teams in the league. The leadership of Nick Suzuki, Brendan Gallagher, and Mike Matheson seems to be in doubt at this point considering how the team has missed out on the playoff stage for three years in a row. So far, they are three years removed from competing at the Stanley Cup final in 2020-21, and now they are searching for a way back to the top of the competition, only this time, they are really eager to show that they have what it takes to win big as they hope to deliver a promising campaign to prove that they are still a competitive team to look out for.
Which Canadian Team Will Emerge Victorious on the Big Stage?
At this point, these Canadian teams are eager to deliver a massive push on their way to the top of the big stage, and it does seem that this season will be as interesting as it gets. But what makes it more promising is that these Canadian teams are expected to make a dash to the top, but at the end of the day, only one of them shall rise as the kings of the NHL.
