Fox Sent to Spurs, LaVine Gets Fresh Start in Sacramento
The wild weekend of the NBA is not yet over as another blockbuster trade just happened with De’Aaron Fox moving on to join the San Antonio Spurs while the Sacramento Kings land Zach LaVine in hopes of coming up with an impressive push in the playoff run heading into the second half of the season.
The Spurs and Kings are two of the teams over .500 but still far away from the top eight of the wild Western Conference. It seems that both teams are gearing up for a shot at the top after giving up key players and gaining an impressive boost to help their case for the coming months of NBA action before the All-Star Break.
The Kings are currently 10th in the Western Conference with a 24-24 record, while the Spurs sit at the 12th spot. This season has been wild in the West, and we have seen how it has forced many teams’ hands to come up with massive trades even before the deadline, which says a lot about how the competition is going to be intense and blazing to watch.
The Trade Winners
Initially, the Kings get a boost with Zach LaVine providing a different dynamic than what Fox can offer. Over the years, the Kings have been in a losing set of campaigns, and even initial success have led to poor results. Like Doncic, Fox was also a franchise piece for the Kings, and so the shock wasn’t really that bad as compared to the Luka trade that caught many fans and even analysts off-guard.
However, the winner for this trade would ultimately go to the San Antonio Spurs. Victor Wembanyama is already an All-Star this season, and we are now expecting to see him thrive with De’Aaron Fox, who is still in his prime and might well be the two big stars for the Spurs in the future – who also have a young core to build around.
The third team – the Chicago Bulls, on the other hand, will be getting some leftovers from both teams, with Zach Collins, Tre Jones, and Kevin Huerter now moving to the storied city. The Bulls also get their own 2025 pick via the Spurs in the said trade. The Kings also receive three first round picks, and three picks in the second round in the trade.
The Spurs on the Rise
This trade is a massive win for the Spurs, who literally added a star without giving up much at all. Fox is already eligible for an extension this summer, and with the guard averaging 25 points, 6.1 assists and five rebounds per game this season for the Kings, expect him to be a boost for the Spurs now more than ever.
The Spurs still get to keep most of its stash of draft picks or even the keys to its young core, such as Stephon Castle, Jeremy Sochan and Keldon Johnson. It is also worth noting that the Spurs have managed to hold on to the veterans in Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes, who are both sitting in their first year with the team.
San Antonio is known well for being able to build some of the best teams in the league, and it seems that they are laying the foundations for this one as they seek to surround Wembanyama with all the necessary pieces that could help him lead them to bigger heights, and possibly contend for the Play-In Tournament this season.
