The World Series has been really quite a fun stage for the Dodgers-Yankees rivalry, but while it has been short, there are a lot of promising takeaways from the showdown that proved to be pivotal in creating the biggest hype for what can be said as the most massive World Series of the decade.
Still, the 2024 World Series ended in a bang. The Dodgers wrapped up the contest, the Yankees tried to force a comeback, and the competition really flared up for the ages. At this point, there are a lot of talks as to how the World Series ended up as a promising campaign that helped the MLB launch itself to the top of the sports world once more.
What Went Down in the World Series?
The World Series was a promising clash of the two biggest teams in the league – the Dodgers who emerged at the top of the National League, and the Yankees who dominated the American League. Both teams ended up as the top teams in their respective leagues, with Los Angeles just having a few more wins in its record over New York.
LA took Game 1 with a promising game-winner from Freddie Freeman, who capitalized a massive blast to finish the game – capping off a 6-3 win in a wild start to the series as the Dodgers took a 1-0. Game 2 would go on to be another story of a tight game as the Dodgers barely survived to a 4-2 win, and then a repeat of the score in Game 3, but this time needing a little bit of help from Yoshinobu Yamamoto to take a 3-0 lead.
With the odds stacked against them, it does seem that time was running out for New York. The Yankees went on to turn up the engines in Game 4, hoping to avoid a sweep. Aaron Judge came alive and delivered as he led the club to a high-powered 11-4 victory. It was a massive finish, but it did spark enough conviction and confidence for the Yankees to enter the next game with the season hanging in the balance.
Game 5 proved to be pivotal for the Yankees as they grabbed an early 5-0 lead. Fans were celebrating at the Yankee Stadium and were excited to see the series shift back to Los Angeles once more. However, a massive meltdown by the team allowed the Dodgers to come back strong and make a push of their own to the big stage, which later drove the series to a close as Los Angeles wrapped up the game in a 7-6 win.
What Made the 2024 World Series a Battle to Remember?
So why did the 2024 World Series have enjoyed a promising resurgence in its ratings? For starters, the American audience has been outdone by Japanese viewers, and there is certainly a lot of hype with the way this matchup has also transcended with the massive number of viewers with the way the series expanded.
For starters, the series averaged around 30 million viewers just from the United States and Japan, and that already says a lot about the way the game has imploded at this point. Just imagine if the series needed two more games to wrap up – that would have set the bar for the rest of the World Series to come.
Here’s what made the 2024 World Series full of hype:
Battle of the MVPs
There has been a lot of talk as to how the World Series is a massive clash between the best teams in the league, and having Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge on the same field definitely brings a lot of energy to the game. However, it is worth noting that neither of these two stars actually performed at a high level in the World Series. Sure, they did bring the hype, imagine having two MVP stars and they were really bringing the elite presence in the game, but both Ohtani and Judge failed to come up with the swashbuckling plays, massive performances, and fiery grit that was expected from them. Still, Ohtani won the stats battle by a nudge, but the Dodgers also emerged victorious, so there’s that.
The Freddie Freeman Show
While there have been some disappointing performances, it was Freddie Freeman who stole the show in the World Series. He started the series with that massive grand slam walkoff to win Game 1 for the Dodgers, and he continued to be a promising performer in the next four games. At the age of 35, Freeman finished with four home runs, and 12 RBI, and hit at .300 in the contests. He would go on to be named the MVP of the series and managed to show that he still has what it takes to be the elite performer when it matters most.
A Rivalry Renewed – Again
Of course, the main story of the World Series was how the rivalry between the Dodgers and the Yankees was finally reignited once more, and it cannot be denied that the hype has been really promising for the two teams. Both finished as the top team in the AL and NL, and have the two best records in the league. These two teams have met the most times in the World Series, and it cannot be denied that the Dodgers winning this one only sparks the rivalry’s prominence after having the last meeting in 43 years.
Can We See Another World Series Like This?
At this point, it is not impossible that we will see another clash between the Yankees and the Dodgers. Sure, this one ended pretty early than expected, but with the way these two clubs are structured, expect to see them in one, two, or three years on the World Series stage once more. We have just got ourselves a heated rivalry back in commission, and that means every clash from the two teams moving forward will be a showdown to look out for.
For now, the Dodgers take the win on this one, and one can say that this will be something to look out for in the years to come.
