About 30 sportsbooks are operating legally in the United States now. And that's just counting traditional, licensed sportsbooks — not sweepstakes or DFS pick'em platforms. It can be tough to keep up — a few years ago thanks to new sportsbook launches, and now with all the shut downs.

Market Leaders and State Coverage

DraftKings leads the way with 25+ states, including Washington D.C., ahead of even market leader FanDuel, thanks to DK's exclusivity in New Hampshire and Oregon.

Right now, you can separate sportsbooks into three groups:

  • Eight books operate in 10+ states, with bet365 the latest to join that club. These books control almost the entire U.S. market.
  • Another six books are in 4+ states, but they're mostly the same states.
  • Another roughly 20 books operate in just 1-2 states (also mostly the same states, like Michigan and Iowa, where the barrier to entry is low). And more and more are shutting down every month.

We put together a full list and interactive map of where every sportsbook operates. Red states don't have full online betting available, green means the book operates in that state, and gray means the state has online betting but the book is not there.

There are also always sportsbooks shutting down operations altogether or in different states, albeit not right away. So there may be some books on the list that have announced they're exiting a state but haven't actually done it yet. Fully-shutdown sportsbooks have been moved from this list and into the Sportsbook Graveyard.

Special Cases and Limitations

If a book or state is missing, readers are encouraged to reach out to the author on social media.

There are a few unique situations, like BetParx, which operates as Play Gun Lake in Michigan.

Only sportsbooks that are truly online and available from everywhere in the state are listed. For example, BetMGM is available online only if you're inside an MGM casino in Mississippi.

Popular DFS platforms or sweepstakes sportsbooks are not included, though options like Fliff are mentioned as alternatives for bettors not in a legal betting state.
