Following Manchester City’s big win in the recent season of the English Premier League, we have seen massive strides from the club in the past few years. But have you ever wondered which county has made the biggest success in the competition in the Premier League era?
Which Are the Most Successful Clubs in the English Football?
The early years of the league has been dominated by various clubs from the North and Midlands, as professional football was embraced there faster compared to the Southern part of England. Back then, clubs such as Preston North End, Aston Villa, and Sunderland have been the most dominant clubs over the years, before Football Alliance was absorbed into the league.
It took years before a team from the south side to win the EPL, with Arsenal clinching the title in the 1931 season. Over the years, Manchester United has become the most dominant team in the EPL, with a total of 20 titles since the dawn of the top-flight football. Liverpool is next on the list with 19 titles, just one title behind the record total. Arsenal and Manchester City follow suit with 13 and 10 titles, respectively.

There are a total of 20 different teams that have won the top-flight title, but as of the time of writing, only a total of 13 teams have a championship and are still left in the EPL, which says a lot about the competitive level in English football. By region, the Northwest still reigns supreme with a whopping total of 65 titles combined coming from seven different teams. The London region follows suit with 21 championships from three clubs. Teams from Yorkshire and the West Midlands both have 11 titles each coming from four and three clubs, respectively. The only regions in England that do not have a title are the South West and Wales.
Home Club Represent: Which County is the Most Successful in the EPL Era
There have been a lot of champions ever since the Premier League was inaugurated in 1992. This research does not include the previous iterations of the top flight league, which has the Football League from 1888 to 1892, and then the Football League First Division from 1892 to 1992. When it comes to county championships, Manchester reigns supreme with a total of 21 championships, coming from 13 titles off Manchester United and eight off of Manchester City. London, despite having three teams, only has a total of eight total championships in its runs in the EPL, with Chelsea winning the most titles at five and Arsenal with three championships

What’s stunning is that Liverpool, the club with the second-most titles in the EPL, has won only one title in the Premier League era. That ties the same for Leicester and Blackburn, whose clubs (Leicester City and Blackburn Rovers) are now outside of EPL contention. One can argue that there is misplaced hype on some of the playing teams in the EPL, as well as waning dominance from some of the teams over the years.
Manchester’s Success in the EPL
Manchester, as said above, is the most dominant team in the EPL right now, winning a total of 21 titles in 32 years, which says a lot about how the rival clubs have chalked up an impressive takeover of English football at the highest level. Manchester United won three straight titles twice, doing it in 1999-2001, and in 2006-2009. United last won its title in 2013-14, and nearly had one in 2020-21. It was also the same year that Manchester City took over, winning its first title since going back-to-back in 2017-18 and 2018-19. As of the time of writing, City has won four titles in a row, including a promising finish in the 2023-24 season with a close victory.
London’s Underrated Dominance
It is quite surprising to note that London has the most teams in the EPL, and yet has fewer titles in the EPL era behind Manchester. London takes pride in having a lot of well-known teams, such as Arsenal, Chelsea, and Tottenham Hotspur – who have titles in the top flight. Chelsea has the most titles in the EPL era with five titles, with its last win coming in the 2016-17 season. Arsenal, on the other hand, have last won the EPL title in the 2003-04 season as the Invincibles, but have contended as a runner-up in the last two seasons in a row. It is also worth noting that London has a total of seven EPL teams, which just shows how underrated their dominance is with the lack of championships but extensive presence in the top-flight.
Liverpool’s Overhyped Prominence
Two teams actually reside in the Merseyside area of Liverpool. That includes Liverpool FC and Everton. Both are winning teams in the top-flight, with the Reds amassing a total of 19 titles while Everton has won nine. However, all of those titles have been won outside of the EPL era, with the only Premier League win coming from Liverpool’s dominant season in the 2019-20 campaign. The Reds are still active contenders in the top-flight, finishing third in the recent season and have been runners-up in five seasons inside the EPL era. Everton, on the other hand, has not seen a promising finish in a very long while.
A Once in a Blue Moon Presence by Leicester and Blackburn
Both Leicester City and Blackburn Rovers currently reside in the Championship – a tier below the Premier League in the English Football Pyramid. It can be remembered that the Rovers once won the EPL title in the 1994-95 season when they disrupted what could have been a three-peat for Manchester United, and a potential run at 10 straight titles at the time. Leicester, on the other hand, won a miracle run in the 2015-16 season under Nigel Pearson and would go on a massive downfall in the next campaigns. However, Leicester is slated to make a comeback on the top-flight after emerging as top winners in the Championship’s latest season.
What to Expect in the Next EPL Season?
The EPL is slated to have six of the last seven champions back on the big stage once more, and it cannot be denied that the stakes are starting to get even bigger between the top clubs in the league. Manchester City is seeking to become the first team to win five straight, Arsenal is looking to bring its consistent presence at the top, and Liverpool is looking to add to its titles in the EPL era. Manchester United is also expected to come back stronger after a lowly finish, and so does Chelsea. Let’s not forget that Leicester City is coming in with a vengeance at hand.
