All those big accolades in the NBA have definitely made LeBron James the most celebrated (or hated, depending on your stance) player in the league. Over the years, James has established his dominance in the game one year after another and has shown why he deserves a lot of praise in the game with the way he delivers promising performances night in and night out.
But that’s just the NBA, what about LeBron in the Olympics?
How Legendary LeBron Has Been in the Olympics?
Not all players get the chance to play at a high level in the Olympics, let alone get a shot to play plenty of minutes against international players from various countries. James, as the best player in the NBA for almost two decades, definitely has had his fair share of low-minute games all the way to stalwart performances in the big stage, and that has definitely earned him a lot of praise over the years.
If you are not impressed, James has finished with a total of three gold medals and a bronze medal in his campaign with Team USA. Many people even thought that James already stopped playing for Team USA when he no longer participated in the 2016 and 2020 Olympics, only for him to make a return to the big stage, arguably for the last time in 2024.
Of course, we all know how the story ended for James in the 2024 Olympics. It was a story for Team USA to remember on the Olympic stage, and one can say that LeBron has definitely left his legacy well in the game now more than ever, and that says a lot about how James has managed to build a strong reputation in the league with his impressive success. If you are not pleased with the way he has earned his path to multiple gold medals over the years, then you’re probably an MJ or Curry fan at this point.
Here’s how LeBron has played in every Olympic campaign over the years:
2004 Olympic Games
The 2004 Olympics was infamous for dethroning Team USA in its’ star-studded campaign when they just settled for a bronze medal finish in the tournament. At the time, James was just the reigning Rookie of the Year, fresh off his first season in the NBA. Also, the United States squad was also led by the likes of Allen Iverson and Tim Duncan, who were the prime American players at the time. James was just 19 at that time, and he joined young newcomers to the team such as Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade, and Emeka Okafor. Of course, Team USA would lose to Argentina in the semifinals, which marked the team’s fifth Olympic loss, but they managed to beat Lithuania in a narrow 104-96 win to clinch the bronze medal.
James played in all eight games that time, but of course, the struggles of Team USA and his sudden rise to the game was met with a lot of criticism as the United States fell out of its dominance in the game.
LeBron Stats: 8 games, averaged 5.4 points, 1.0 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game while shooting 59.4% from the field.
2008 Olympic Games
Team USA returned with a bang in the 2008 Olympics, this time dubbed as the “Redeem Team” with the hopes of returning the gold medal to the United States after that infamous bronze finish in the previous campaign. This time, LeBron James was coming in with a bigger role in the team, which meant more playing time and an established part on the offensive scoring load for the team. While Kobe Bryant took over the captaincy for this team, it was James and Wade who built an impressive tandem and led the team in scoring for most of the games. Team USA would go on to avenge their loss last 2004 in their semis rout of Argentina, where James dropped 15 points on 54.5% shooting. Team USA went on to finish with ease in the final, earning James his first gold medal in the Olympic stage.
LeBron Stats: 8 games, averaged 15.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game on 60.2% shooting from the field.
2012 Olympic Games
James returned to play in his arguably last Olympic run with Team USA at the time in the 2012 London Olympics. While it was not declared, Bryant, James, and Wade all shared captaincy roles in the squad, but it was also the time when James played a more central role in the team – coming up with all-around performances in the competition and led the team to an undefeated 8-0 record, beating teams by an average of 32 points. It was this time when the United States emphasized speed, quickness, and outside shooting over size, strength, and paint dominance.
James would go on to take the back seat to give Kevin Durant the bigger scoring load, but the star forward took a promising role of calling the plays and giving Team USA an unorthodox style of having a point forward. Team USA would go on to win the gold medal, beating Argentina in the semis and Spain in the final just like in 2008.
LeBron Stats: 8 games, averaged 13.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 5.6 assists while shooting 60.3% from the field.
2024 Olympics Games
After missing out on the last two Olympic runs in 2016 and 2020, James would go on to return for one last time in the Olympic Games in 2024. He rallied a total of four MVP winners into joining the team, such as Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, and Joel Embiid. Team USA’s identity this time was based on the so-called “The Avengers” due to its high profile roster, but also with the goal of re-establishing USA’s dominance in the basketball stage after a no-medal finish in the prior 2023 FIBA World Cup. James would enjoy his best run in the Olympic stage in this edition, delivering all-around performances where he even notched a triple-double, which was also his second in the history of the Olympics. James would go on to be named as the Olympic MVP for his stellar and consistent performance over the competition.
LeBron Stats: 8 games, 14.2 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 8.5 assists on 66.0% shooting from the field.
Which Olympic LeBron Was the Best?
Stat-wise, James has scored at a higher clip in the 2008 Olympics, which was the first time that he won a gold medal in his Olympic run. However, it cannot be denied that his consistency was marked with impressive field-goal percentage. It is also worth noting that James has seen a spike in his all-around statistics in the 2024 edition, which just says a lot about how he has improved his level of play and showed off his big game whenever he needed to step up.
If you are not convinced, take a look at the table below:
Year | Points | Rebounds | Assists | FG% | Result |
2004 | 5.4 | 1.0 | 1.6 | 59.4% | Bronze |
2008 | 15.5 | 5.2 | 3.8 | 60.2% | Gold |
2012 | 13.3 | 5.6 | 5.6 | 60.3% | Gold |
2024 | 14.2 | 6.8 | 8.5 | 66.0% | Gold |
*boldface indicates Olympic-high
These are LeBron’s stat lines in all four Olympic campaigns. It cannot be denied that James has done a great job of putting up an impressive run in almost every single edition, showing a big improvement one after another. This just further points to James’ incredible longevity, putting up massive numbers as he progressed further in his basketball career.
Love him or hate him, the Olympics is even enough proof alone to show how great James has been over the years.
A Legendary Performance to Remember
It is expected that LeBron James has played his last run in the Olympics, and one can say that he has done a great job of lifting the United States to a bigger level and finishing his international run on a high note. This just says a lot as to how James has been a one-of-a-kind player in the game, and it may take a long time for us to see a legendary player just like him to emerge in the NBA in the years to come.
