Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions is set to release this month, September 3, 2024, to be exact, but will this competitive sports game be considered a promising esports title in the long run? After the success of Hogwarts Legacy, it seems that Portkey Games is ready to shoot their shot again with a promising Harry Potter title once more, this time titled “Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions”. Of course, many Potterheads would be delighted to try out this game, after all, it has been a long time since the franchise of Wizarding World has seen a title dedicated to the beloved fictional sport.
What Makes Quidditch Champions a Timely Release?
In the aftermath of the Esports World Cup, many critics claimed that this is the best chance for many game developers to actually try and create more esports titles that can ascend into one of the biggest titles in the game, which definitely says a lot about the expectations for Quidditch Champions to be on the right time considering how esports has emerged well over the years with a sustainable scene that offers impressive competition across various players from multiple countries all over the world.
The success of Hogwarts Legacy as a standalone Harry Potter game also adds to the daring hopes of seeing Quidditch Champions as a possible game that will exceed expectations in the long run. If you are not impressed, Hogwarts Legacy was the best-selling game of 2023, breaking a streak of 14 years where either a Call of Duty or a Rockstar Games release held the top position in terms of sales. On top of that, it has been hailed as the best-selling game in multiple countries such as the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom.
Steam, a video game provider service, has listed Hogwarts Legacy as one of the best-performing games of 2023, and it cannot be denied that this success has inspired Portkey Games to dare and try to expand into the esports scene, which definitely says a lot about how Quidditch Champions is expected to perform in the coming weeks and months. Since it will be released on multiple mainstream platforms such as the PS5, PS4, XBOX, Nintendo Switch, and PC, it means that Quidditch Champions will have a massive audience coming in as soon as it releases.
A Big Improvement from the Quidditch World Cup
In case you didn’t know, Quidditch Champions is the second installment of the Harry Potter-related sport Quidditch video games made by Electronic Arts. The first was the Quidditch World Cup, released back in 2003, with the current game being announced in development 20 years later.
The Quidditch World Cup was considered a spin-off from the main storyline games, and with Quidditch Champions coming in as a title that will succeed the former, it is expected that it will be a promising game that will attempt to break its path into the esports scene. Back in 2003, the Quidditch World Cup was already made available for multiplayer, but it was a time when various competitive games such as StarCraft, Generals, Red Alert, Hearts of Iron, and many other titles were laying the foundations of competitive esports.
Of course, the graphics will be drastically different considering that these games are 20 years apart. While Quidditch Champions will take on a more cartoonish style – different from the like-real graphics that Hogwarts Legacy presented in its success, it is still worth noting that this upcoming game will definitely boast a promising graphical advancement – something that will entice Potterheads to try it as they did give a chance to Hogwarts Legacy.
Why Quidditch Champions is Expected to be an Esports Title?
While it has a single-player experience, it is easy to note that it follows the same format as with multiple competitive esports titles out there. That is why many gaming critics are keeping a close eye on the Quidditch Champions now more than ever. Here are three big reasons why there is a high chance that Quidditch Champions can become an esports title in the long run given the time soon.
A Character Class Present
Like most of the esports titles that we know of, it is easy to expect that there are character classes present in the game. However, this is usually found in role-playing games and MMORPGs, and Quidditch Champions is labeled as a sports game, meaning that it identifies itself along the likes of NBA 2K, FC 24, and Rocket League – which are the big sports games played in the Esports World Cup. For this game, however, players can create their respective characters with four different positions or character classes, ranging from the Chaser, Seeker, Beater, and Keeper – and this further shows how well the Quidditch Champions is expected to deliver in terms of making a distinctive feature in the game.
A Game Bringing Familiar Names
The Quidditch World Cup featured a lot of playable characters who were also in the films and books, such as Harry Potter for Gryffindor, Draco Malfoy for Slytherin, Cedric Diggory for Hufflepuff, and Cho Chang for Ravenclaw – who were Seekers for their respective Hogwarts House. The Quidditch Champions, however, did not include any of these known characters in its gameplay trailer which was released back in July 29th. However, gameplay footages were leaked in Reddit and similar websites back in May 2023 and August 2023, showing players can take on the roles of well-known characters such as Harry Potter and Ron Weasley. Warner Bros. took action quickly and removed all leaked content. While it is not confirmed, the leaks do hint that there is indeed a possible chance that players will get to experience playing as the renowned Harry Potter characters.
A Unique Sport to be Played
We have seen how unique sports can be quite inventive in the game over the years. Rocket League, for all its glory in the gaming industry, has managed to bring its way into the esports competitive scene as well, and it cannot be denied that Quidditch Champions is expected to come up with the same formula of bringing a unique proposition for players to enjoy. Rocket League is identified as “soccer, but with rocket-powered cars”, and one can definitely say that Quidditch Champions highly resembles soccer and field hockey but adds a blend of being a contact sport with its flying broomsticks. At this point, if Rocket League was successful in bringing its presence to the esports world, one can say that Quidditch Champions has a chance to come up with the same success.
Get Started on Your Broomstick Race!
Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions is slated to release on September 3rd, and one can say that it is expected to make waves in the gaming industry in just a snap. This Portkey Games title is definitely a daring one to look out for, and with the game coming out on multiple platforms, many critics are hoping to see it shine on many competitive scenes – eventually securing its place in the esports world in the long run.
