1. Katharine Hepburn
Born in: Hartford
When: May 12, 1907
Industry: Film and theater
Known for: The Philadelphia Story, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, The African Queen
Katharine Hepburn (born Katharine Houghton Hepburn) was born and raised in Hartford and is often referred to as one of the greatest actresses in Hollywood history. She was raised in an affluent family by progressive parents, and she attended the prestigious Bryn Mawr College. She died on the 29th of June, 2003, but her entire career spanned over six decades, with numerous appearances even in contemporary films and accolades and awards. In fact, Hepburn holds the record for the most Academy Awards for Best Actress, winning four in total. She also received the award for the Greatest Female Star of Hollywood Cinema from the American Film Institute.
Fun fact: Despite her fame, Hepburn remained deeply connected to Connecticut throughout her life, spending her later years in Old Saybrook, where her family had a summer home. She was also known for her fiercely independent nature and often wore trousers before it was considered socially acceptable for women to do so. She was looked up to by women, and she stood as a symbol for the ‘modern woman’ in the 20th century.
2. John Mayer
Born in: Bridgeport
When: October 16, 1977
Industry: Music
Known for: Your Body Is a Wonderland, Gravity, Daughters
Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter and guitar virtuoso John Clayton Mayer was born in Bridgeport and raised in nearby Fairfield. He attended the Berklee College of Music and is known for blending pop, blues, and rock, and Mayer has become a staple of American music. His first hit was Your Body is a Wonderland, and it won the Best Male Pop Vocal Performance at the 45th Grammy Awards. He received his second Grammy Award for Waiting on the World to Change. In 2015, he joined former Grateful Dead members and formed a band called Dead & Company, and his musical style has undergone a series of transformations, too. It was estimated that by 2014, he had sold more than 20 million albums around the world.
Fun fact: Mayer developed his love for guitar after watching Back to the Future and seeing Marty McFly (played by Michael J. Fox, who is also from Connecticut) play. He was so dedicated that he practiced guitar obsessively and even ended up in the hospital from stress-related heart issues as a teen.
3. Christopher Lloyd
Born in: Stamford

Another Back to the Future alumnus (just like his ‘partner,’ the aforementioned Marty McFly) and known for his eccentric portrayal of Dr. Emmett “Doc” Brown, Christopher Lloyd hails from Stamford. With a unique ability to embody offbeat characters, such as Jim Ignatowski in the famous TV comedy series Taxi, Lloyd became a pop culture icon during the 1980s and 90s. He took home 2 Emmy Awards for Taxi, and earned a third for his guest appearance in Road to Avonlea.
Fun fact: Lloyd’s grandfather was one of the founders of Texaco Oil and he is also a descendant of one of the passengers of the Mayflower, John Howland. Despite his family's wealth, Lloyd pursued a career in acting with humble beginnings in New York theatre before making it big in Hollywood.
4. Seth MacFarlane
Born in: Kent
When: October 26, 1973
Industry: Television, film, animation, scriptwriting, music

He also co-created The Cleveland Show and co-produced and directed (as well as starred) in the hit comedy films Ted, Ted 2, and A Million Ways to Die in the West. He’s a multi-talented voice actor, animator, writer, and producer, and MacFarlane has left an undeniable mark on American comedy and animation. He graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design where he studied animation, and he got his first break in Hollywood when he was hired to write and animate for Johnny Bravo, Dexter’s Laboratory, and Cow and Chicken. He has won several Primetime Emmys for Family Guy and won the Webby Award for Film & Video Person of the Year in 2009. He has also received 5 Grammy Award nominations for his work as a vocal performer, singing jazz songs and musicals.
Fun fact: MacFarlane began drawing cartoon characters when he was just two years old. At age 9, he published a comic strip in his local newspaper, named Walter Crouton, which led to a ‘mini-controversy’ in town when he drew a character kneeling at the altar for Communion and saying, “Can I have fries with that?”. Nevertheless, his artistic talent and love for cartoons set him on the path to becoming a leading figure in animation.
5. Meg Ryan
Born in: Fairfield
When: November 19, 1961
Industry: Film
Known for: When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, You've Got Mail
Meg Ryan, the queen of romantic comedies in the '90s and a bonafide Hollywood star, grew up in Fairfield. She was born Margaret Mary Emily Anne Hyra, which was shortened to Meg Ryan when she started as an actress, and with her girl-next-door charm and talent for comedic timing, she became one of the most bankable actresses of her era. She was called America’s Sweetheart, as she starred in some of the greatest romantic comedy films ever produced, such as You’ve Got Mail, Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry Met Sally, City of Angels, Kate & Leopold, and Proof of Life. Believe it or not, she studied journalism at the University of Connecticut at New York University before she got her big break doing TV commercials and soap operas such as As the World Turns.
Fun fact: Meg Ryan adopted “Meg Ryan” as her stage name early on in her career, as her real name was too long. She got ‘Ryan’ from her maternal grandmother; it was her grandmother’s maiden name.

He received a Primetime Emmy award along with a British Academy Film award and three Golden Globe awards. In the same year, he was awarded a Doctor of Fine Arts degree (honorary) from Yale University.
Fun fact: Despite his serious (and sometimes grumpy) on-screen roles, Giamatti is known for his dry wit and love of Shakespeare. He even once played Hamlet in a New York production. But he also played small roles in hit comedy movies like Big Momma’s House and The Hangover Part II.

With his raspy voice and heartfelt lyrics, Bolton has sold over 75 million records worldwide and won 2 Grammy Awards. He has also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and has won 6 American Music Awards.
Fun fact: Before his solo fame, Bolton fronted a hard rock band called Blackjack, which even toured with Ozzy Osbourne. He also dropped out of high school with his parents’ permission, travelled across the country, and got odd jobs along the way – including a job as the babysitter of Paula Abdul.

Born as Richard Melville Hall, he chose the name Moby when he started his career. He is an electronic music pioneer from Darien who became known as a songwriter, disc jockey, and musician. He rose to global fame with his 1999 album Play, which became one of the best-selling electronic albums of all time. He has sold over 20 million albums around the world, and AllMusic considers him one of the greatest contributors to dance music in the early 90s, bringing dance music to mainstream audiences across the United Kingdom and the United States. In addition to his music, Moby is well-recognized for being an animal rights activist and a prominent vegan. He is also an author of four books and continues to release albums to this day. His last album was released in 2023.
Fun fact: Although his claim that he is related to ‘Moby Dick’ author Herman Melville is apparently false, it is still interesting, to say the least. But Moby is also a committed vegan and outspoken animal rights activist, and those are two facts he can be proud of. He has also practiced several faiths and is quite spiritual, but he identified as an atheist and as an agnostic while growing up.

He first played football in college for the Florida Gators, where he earned his first All-American honors and won the 2009 BCS National Championship Game. He was then selected in the 2010 NFL Draft to play for the New England Patriots when he was just 20 years old. But following the offseason, Hernandez was arrested and convicted for murder and sentenced to life in prison. During his short career, he received the John Mackey award and the Ozzie Newsome award, and in high school, he was also Gatorade Football Player of the Year for Connecticut.

Bruce Jenner – now referred to as Caitlyn Marie Jenner – is a decorated sports superstar known for being an Olympic-award winning decathlete in the 70s and 80s. Jenner was a decathlete for a total of six years, which culminated in him winning the men’s decathlon in the Summer Olympics of 1976 in Montreal. But since then, Jenner was also widely recognized for establishing a career as a TV personality and was involved in the auto racing industry. But perhaps most GenXers know Jenner from the reality TV series Keeping Up with the Kardashians, as he married Kris Jenner, the mother of the famous Kardashian sisters. He and Kris Jenner also had two daughters of their own, Kendall and Kylie, who made up the Kardashian sisters as well. He broke the Olympic record in 1976 and also received the top amateur athlete for the James E. Sullivan award and was named the Male Athlete of the Year by the Associated Press in 1976.
