What is Age of Mythology: Retold?

Age of Mythology is a spin-off from the RTS title Age of Empires series. Published inn 2002, the game drew promising inspiration from many myths and legends from various cultures such as the Greeks, Egyptians, and Norse – even adding a version of their own Atlantis. The gameplay elements share a huge resemblance to the Age of Empires games, but the story followed a fictional approach and centered on an Atlantean admiral, Arkantos, who traverses the game’s three cultures in hopes of protecting his land against Poseidon.

In its release back then, Age of Mythology was a successful game in its own right. The game sold over one million units in just four months, going platinum in that stretch. The success allowed the game to see future expansins, such as Age of Mythology: The Titans a year later. An extended edition of the game came out in 2014 on steam, followed by a second expansion, dubbed as the Tale of the Dragon, on January 2016.

Game reviews were pleasing enough to further ignite the talks of how Age of Mythology: Retold, could be quite considered as an esports-worthy title. The 2020s would open up a promising return of competitive Age of Mythology esports, starting with the Voobly Champions League, before it continued to have a consistent set of tournaments. As of 2024 alone, Age of Mythology has held two tournaments so far, including the Red Bull Wololo this coming October 6th.

A Blend for Real-Time Strategy Esports

In case you didn’t notice, there aren’t really a lot of competitive esports titles under the real-time strategy genre – save for StarCraft II. With Age of Mythology already having a small competitive scene, the addition of Retold brings in a new blend for the title as it opens up a bigger graphical improvement, making it easy in the eyes and even allowing it to go side by side against top-notch titles in the industry. So far, StarCraft II stands out as the main standard among many titles, and it cannot be denied that the addition of ray tracing and many special effects mean that the game is ready to take on the bigger challenge. All it needs now is proper marketing and it will definitely lift off as a promising title to enjoy among the esportsfolk at this point.

Will Age of Mythology: Retold Become a Competitive Esports Title?
